[152] According To Sincerity Great Or Little, Are Benefits Shallow Or Deep 随诚大小,利益浅深

如其天姿聪敏,不妨研究性相各宗,仍须以净土法门而为依归,庶不至有因无果。

Like those [with] natural skills [and] aptitude clever [and] quick, [there is] no harm [in] studying [the] nature [and] forms [of] each tradition, [but there] still must [be] with [the] Pure Land Dharma Door, then for reliance [and] refuge. Hopefully, not going so far [as to] have [the] cause [of liberation] without [the] effect.

致以了生脱死之妙法,作口头活计,莫由得其实益也。必须要主敬存诚,对经像如对活佛,不敢稍存怠忽。庶几随己之诚大小,而得浅深诸利益也。

[If] presenting [the] wonderful Dharma of liberation [from the cycle of] birth [and] death, [with this] becoming [a] verbal way of making a living, [it is] not due [to this that] attains its true benefits. [There] must [be] managing [with] reverence [and] retaining sincerity, towards sūtras [and] images like facing living Buddhas, not daring [to] slightly retain idleness [and] negligence. Perhaps according [to] that [of] one’s sincerity [being] great [or] little, then attaining [that] shallow [or] deep [of] all benefits.

至于根机钝者,且专研究净土法门。果真信得及、守得定,决定现生了生脱死,超凡入圣。校彼深通经论,而不实行净土法门者,其利益奚啻天地悬殊也。

As for those [with] roots [and] capacities dull, [they] should focus [on] studying [the] Pure Land Dharma Door. If [with] true Faith reached [and] guarded firmly, definitely [in this] present life liberating [from the cycle of] birth [and] death, transcending [the] ordinary [and] entering [the] noble. Comparing [with] those deeply penetrating [the] sūtras [and] commentaries, those not yet truly practising [the] Pure Land Dharma Door, their benefits [are] not only [like the] heavens [and] earth, far apart.

如上所说,无论甚么资格,最初先下这一味药。则无论甚么邪执谬见,我慢放肆,高推圣境,下劣自居等病,由此一味阿伽陀万病总治之药,无不随手而愈。

As above, [with] that said, regardless [of those with] what[ever] qualifications, first start taking this one-flavoured medicine. Then regardless [of those with] what[ever] evil attachments, wrong views, arrogance, impudence, [those who] highly push [up the] noble realm [i.e. think it is too lofty], [those] lowly [and] inferior, [those] self-reliant, [or those with other] kinds [of] sicknesses, due [to] this one-flavoured medicine of Āgada, [that] cures all ten thousand sicknesses, [it is] without [those] not immediately then healed.

[Note: Sincere mindfulness of Buddha (念佛) in terms of Āmítuófó’s (阿弥陀佛) name, that has the one flavour of liberation’s (解脱) freedom (自由) from suffering, is called the Āgada medicine (阿伽陀药), as it is the panacea that can cure all physical and mental sicknesses with the Buddha’s blessings, which eliminate the evil karmas (恶业) that created and sustains them.

However, complete and lasting healing is attained by reaching his Pure Land (净土), which is with immeasurable life (无量寿), and without the causes, conditions and effects (因缘果) of ageing, sickness and death (老病死).]
