[254] From Practices Manifesting Principles, [When] Manifesting Principles Emphasising Practices
With great awakening [to] principles’ nature of [having] one dharma not established, diligently practising [the] actions [and] contributions of [the] ten thousand practices [for] complete cultivation, then is [the] Middle Path of emptiness [and] existence [in] perfect harmony.
Persons [with] emptiness ‘liberated’, with one Dharma [Door] not cultivated as not established, [are] those all Buddhas call as pitiable.
[The Pure Land Tradition’s Eighth Patriarch] Great Master Liánchí [净土宗八祖莲池大师] said, ‘[With] attachment [to] practices then mindful, [they are] able [to be] continuous, not falsely entering [the] grades of merits. [With] attachment [to] principles, then [with the] mind truly yet [to be] penetrated, [it is] difficult [to] avoid [the] misfortune of falling [into] emptiness.’
With practices, [there] are merits of holding principles. [With] principles, [they are] without [the] ability of [being] independently established thus.
We people learning [the] Buddha[‘s teachings], must then [be with] practices, yet accomplishing principles, then [with] principles, yet accomplishing practices.
[With] principles [and] practices [in] perfect harmony, emptiness [and] existence not two, then can [there be] complete accomplishing [of] samādhi, [for] liberation [from the cycle of] birth [and] death. If personally saying I am the same as [the] Buddha, [with] attachment [to] principles [and] abandonment [of] practices, those differences [are] far.
[There] should [be] exerting [of] efforts [to] practise, [with] wholehearted mindfulness [of the] Buddha[‘s name] [i.e. Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛)], from practices then manifesting principles, manifesting principles then still emphasising on practices, [to] then attain true benefits.
