[88] When Sicknesses’ Suffering Is Extremely Severe, Be Mindful Of The Buddha And Bodhisattva 病苦至剧时,念佛菩萨

若病苦至剧,不能忍受者,当于朝暮念佛回向外,专心致志,念「南无观世音菩萨」。观音现身尘刹,寻声救苦。

If sicknesses’ suffering [becomes] extremely severe, those not able [to] bear [them], should in [the] morning [and] evening, other [than] reciting [the] Buddha[‘s name] [i.e. Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛)], [with the] focused mind [and] devotion, recite ‘Námó Guānshìyīn Púsà’ [i.e. Homage to Contemplator Of The World’s Sounds Bodhisattva]. Contemplator [Of The World’s] Sounds [Bodhisattva will] manifest [her] bodies [in] dust [motes of] lands, [to] seek [their] sounds [for] saving [them from] suffering.

人当危急之际,若能持诵礼拜,无不随感而应,即垂慈佑,令脱苦恼而获安乐也。

When people [are] at moments of critical danger, if able [to] uphold recitation [of her name and] prostration [to her, she is] without [those] not accordingly connecting [to] and responding, immediately extending [with] compassion [to] bless, leading [to] liberation [from] suffering [and] afflictions, [to] then obtain peace [and] bliss.

[Note: Since Āmítuófó is a Buddha, he also has the ability to do the above. However, perhaps because Contemplator Of The World’s Sounds Bodhisattva is well known for being able to do so, this was mentioned.

Also, perhaps because many have incomplete perception that the Bodhisattva ‘only specialises’ in saving from suffering, while the Buddha ‘only specialises’ in guiding to Pure Land, this was mentioned. The truth is, since both are ancient Buddhas (古佛), they can do both equally efficiently. Thus, sincere and focused recitation of either alone will be efficacious too.]
