称佛菩萨名，定蒙救护
[89] Reciting Buddha [Or] Bodhisattva’s Name, Definitely Receiving Salvation [And] Protection
沪战时，闸北房舍，多成灰烬。独余皈依弟子夏馨培之寓所，未曾波及。
When [it was the] Battle [Of Sōng]hù [淞沪] [i.e. Shànghǎi (上海) in 1937], Zháběi’s houses [were with] many [that] became ashes. Only remaining [was the] residence of refuge disciple Xià Xīnpéi, [with fires] not yet spread to.
盖当战事剧烈时，彼全家同念观世音圣号。
When [the] fighting [was] about [to become] severe, his whole family together recited Contemplator [Of The] World’s Sounds [Bodhisattva’s] sacred name [i.e. Námó Guānshìyīn Púsà (南无观世音菩萨)].
且最奇异者，战事起后第七日，渠一家人，始由十九路军救出。
Moreover, that most astonishing, [is that] after [the] fighting arose, [on the] seventh day, his whole family, [was] then by [the] 19th Route Army rescued.
及战停归家，室中诸物，一无所失。非菩萨之佑护，何能如此？
And [with the] battle stopping returning home, all objects within [the] house [was] without one [of] that lost. [If] not [with] blessings of [the] Bodhisattva, how [was it] able [to be] like this?
渠供职新闻报馆已数十年，夫妻均茹素，念佛甚虔。
He [has] already held a post [in a] newspaper office [for] several decades, [with the] husband [and] wife all eating [as] veg[etari]ans, [and] mindfulness [of the] Buddha extremely devout.
是知观音菩萨大慈大悲，遇有灾难，一称圣号，定蒙救护也。
[With] this knowing [that] Contemplator [Of The World’s] Sounds Bodhisattva, [with] great loving-kindness [and] great compassion, meeting [those who] have disasters [and] difficulties, once reciting [her] sacred name, [they will] definitely receive salvation [and] protection.
或曰：「世人千万，灾难频生。观音菩萨仅是一人，何能一时各随其人而救护之耶？即能救护，亦不胜其劳矣。」
Perhaps saying, ‘[The] world’s ten million people, [have] disasters [and] difficulties frequently arising. [As] Contemplator [Of The World’s] Sounds Bodhisattva is only one person, how [is she] able [to, at] one time, [have] each listened [to, with] these persons then saving [and] protecting them? Immediately able [to] save [and] protect, [is she] also not [able to] bear its toil?’
殊不知并非观音处处去救，乃众生心中之观音救之耳。
Actually, [they do] not know [that it] really is not Contemplator [Of The World’s] Sounds [Bodhisattva] going everywhere [to] save, [as] thus [is] Contemplator [Of The World’s] Sounds [Bodhisattva] within sentient beings’ minds saving them only.
[Note: The same principles and practice apply to mindfulness of Āmítuófó’s (阿弥陀佛) name with the same efficacy.]
