[247] How To Be ‘With Ten Thousand Cultivators, With Ten Thousand Persons Going To Pure Land’?

[Of] those ‘Without Chán [and] with Pure Land [practice, of] ten thousand [cultivators], ten thousand persons [will] go [to Pure Land]. If attaining sight [of A]mitā[bha Buddha], why worry [about] not awakening’, these people, although yet [to] understand [their] minds [and] see [their] nature, but again [are with] determined Aspiration [to] seek birth [in the] Western [Pure Land Of Ultimate Bliss] [西方极乐世界].

[Note: These teachings are on ‘Chán And Pure Land’s Fourfold Explanations’ 《禅净四料简》: https://purelanders.com/2009/12/15/brief-on-four-categories, especially the second verse.]

With [the] Buddha in past kalpas, [having] given rise [to] great vows, [to] gather [and] receive sentient beings, ‘like [a] mother recollecting [her] child’, sentient beings, if able [to be] like children recollecting [their] mother, [with] sincere [and] wholehearted mindfulness [of the] Buddha[‘s name] [i.e. Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛)], [will] then [have] connection [and] response [for] mutual interaction, [to] immediately receive [his] gathering [and] reception.

Those diligently cultivating concentration [and] wisdom, [will] certainly attain rebirth [in Pure Land].

Even if [those with the] five heinous [transgressions [and] ten evil [karmas], approaching [life’s] end [and by] suffering compelled, give rise [to] great repentance, [and] recite [the] Buddha’s name, perhaps to ten recitations, or only one recitation, directly descending [to] life’s end, [they will] also all receive [the] Buddha’s manifested bodies, [to] receive [and] guide [them to be] reborn [in his Pure Land. Is this] not ‘[of] ten thousand cultivators, ten thousand persons [will] go [to Pure Land]’?

Thus, these, although [with] mindfulness [of] Buddha not much, with [the] utmost [of] their vigour, [are] thus able [to] obtain these great benefits. [There] must not [be] with those [practising] superficially [and] leisurely, comparing [with] them [having] more [or] less.

Already born [in the] Western [Pure Land], seeing [the] Buddha [and] hearing [the] Dharma, although having slowness [or] quickness not [the] same, however already [with] high entry [into the] noble stream, forever not retrogressing.

According [to] their root natures shallow [or] deep, perhaps gradually or suddenly, realising all fruits’ positions. Already attaining realisation [of] fruits, then awakening [does] not need [to be] spoken [of. This is] so-called, ‘If attaining sight [of A]mitā[bha Buddha], why worry [about] not awakening?’
