[139] Āmítuófó Is [The] Dharma Realm’s Treasury Body
Why Have Focused Mindfulness Of One Buddha?

Moreover, [do] not say [that] conditioned contemplation [of] one Buddha, [is] not as good [as the] greatness of meritorious virtues [from] conditioned contemplation [of] many Buddhas.

[It] must [be] known [that] Amitā[bha] Buddha [i.e. Āmítuófó] is [the] Dharma realm’s treasury body. [Of] all [the] ten directions’ dharma realms’ all Buddhas’ meritorious virtues, Amitā[bha] Buddha, [as] one Buddha, [has them] all completely.

[Note: The Dharma realm’s treasury body (法界藏身) is the Dharmakaya (法身: Dharma Body) of all Buddhas, the universal ‘storehouse’ of the immeasurable compassion, wisdom and meritorious virtues of all Buddhas that pervades all space and time, in which all Buddhas are interconnected as one.]

[This is] like Śakra’s net [of] gems, [with a] thousand gems’ [reflections] gathered in [each] one gem, [and each] one gem[‘s reflection] everywhere in [the] thousand gems. Raising one, all [are] gathered, without [any] lacking [and] without [any] remaining [ungathered].

If [as] great ones [who have] long cultivated, [for their] conditioned realms, there is no harm [in them being] broad [and] vast. [When their] realms [are] more and more broad, then [will their] minds [be] more and more single-minded.

If [as those of] initial minds [with] little learning, [their] conditioned realms, if [are] broad, then [will their] minds’ consciousnesses [be] scattered, and [with] obstacles deep [and] wisdom shallow, [these will] perhaps cause [the] arising [of] many demonic matters.

Thus, our Buddha, [the] World-Honoured [One], and successive generations’ all [Pure Land] Patriarchs, all enabled that wholehearted [and] focused mindfulness [of] Amitā[bha] Buddha, in this way. Awaiting [when] this mindfulness [of] Buddha attains realisation [of] samādhi, then [will a] hundred thousand Dharma Doors’ immeasurable wonderful meanings, all [be] complete[ly understood].

[As] ancient persons say, ‘Those already bathing [in the] great ocean, must [be] using [a] hundred rivers’ waters. [With] oneself [having] arrived [at] Hányuán Hall, [there is] no need [to] ask [where] Cháng’ān [is].’ [This] can [be] said [to be] that best [for] describing [thus].
