[136] Learning From The Buddha Must Be With Humility Self-Tending

[Those] learning [from] sages [and] learning [from the] Buddha, [should] all [be] with harmonious human relationships, [to the] utmost fulfil responsibilities, end evil [thoughts], maintain sincerity, [of] all evils not do, [and of] all good practise [them] as roots.

[There] also must [be] with humility self-tending, concealing glory [and] hiding brilliance, [with] higher emulating [of] ancient persons, to personally undertake practice. Able [to do] thus, then their learning [and] their moral character, can then [be] higher than [their] contemporaries.

Often, clever people, all belong [to those with] arrogance [by] boasting revealed, [with] scathing [and] mean [words], their minds [are] absolutely without [that] reserved. These people, [if] not bumpy [with hardships] lifelong, will [in their] young years die prematurely.

(All harbouring intentions handling matters, must towards [being] ‘thick’ [on the] path [i.e. sincere, honest and kind], [on this] one side do [them. With] ‘thickness’ then carrying blessings, [with] ‘thinness’ then without blessings [that] can [be] attained.

If again, in addition to that, with jealousy [and] meanness, treachery [and] insidiousness devious, then like mountain summits’ towering peaks, whatever rain’s moisturisation [will] all not [be] received, [and] whatever grasses [and] trees [will] all not grow. See ‘Second Compilation’s Reply Letter [To] Jīn Shànshēng’.)
