[30] Top Ten Reasons On Why The Bodhisattva Path Is Not For This Human World Only 十大菩萨道不只为人间的理由

Question: Is it so, that Buddhist practice, in terms of the Bodhisattva path (菩萨道) should be done in this human world (人间), for bettering this world’s people only?

Answer: No. Below are some reasons on why this is not true.

[1] Location: Bodhisattva practice (菩萨行) should be done wherever we are, both within this human world in this life now, and within all other worlds after this life later, including Āmítuófó’s (阿弥陀佛: Amitābha Buddha) Pure Land (净土).

[2] Expeditation: Bodhisattva practice includes guiding oneself and others to reach Pure Land, where all will become Great Bodhisattvas (大菩萨), where Buddhahood is most swiftly expedited.

[3] Non-Attachment: Attachment to always staying in this human world for learning and practice is like wanting to stay in an imperfect elementary spiritual school while the perfect spiritual university that is Pure Land, as recommended by all Buddhas, is already available.

[4] Openness: Bodhisattva practice not only continues in Pure Land, it is expedited there most efficiently for the sake of all beings, and is not constrained to be within it or this human world only, but for benefitting all worlds’ beings everywhere.

[5] Betterment: Pure Land practitioners practise the Bodhisattva path here and now too, by bettering this world, and practising to reach the best world (Pure Land), to learn how to best better all worlds.

[6] Compassion: It is not the Bodhisattva path to encourage others to ‘sink’ in this Dharma-Ending Age’s (末法时期) ‘ship’ together, without bailing out to reach Pure Land, where there is spiritual and physical safety. To do so is to lack compassion and wisdom.

[7] Non-Avoidance: True Bodhisattvas practise everywhere, including in and via Pure Land. No proper Bodhisattvas will avoid Pure Land. In fact, all Bodhisattvas do go to Pure Land for their final training towards Buddhahood.

[8] Example: Universal Virtue Bodhisattva (普贤菩萨), in the Practices And Vows’ Chapter《行愿品》, clearly expressed his great vow (愿) and practice (行) to reach Pure Land. Of course, he is there already, while he continues to manifest in other worlds to help many other beings at the same time, to guide them to Pure Land too. This is the Bodhisattva model whom all Buddhists should follow, as he stands for the perfect practice of all Bodhisattvas.

[9] Universality: No Buddha or Bodhisattva in any sūtra has ever taught any being that they must only practise the Bodhisattva path in this human world, as they all exemplify the same perfect compassion for all beings in all world and encourage all to cultivate likewise.

[10] Ultimate Means: The Pure Land Dharma Door (净土法门) is promoted by all Buddhas in all worlds of all directions, as recorded in sūtras such as the Amitābha Sūtra《阿弥陀经》. To claim otherwise is to slander all Buddhas. This Pure Land path is so strongly encouraged because it is the greatest skilful means (方便) for guiding all beings to Buddhahood.
