无忧偈
Verses [On] Sorrowlessness
忧心恐惧时,
诚念弥陀名。
名带十二光,
含有欢喜光。
When [with the] sorrowful, [worrying and anxious] mind [with] fear, sincerely recite Āmítuófó’s name. [For his] name carries twelve lights, including [his] Joyful Light’s [blessings].
念佛感佛光,
忧心转安心。
恐惧成大安,
只须信愿行。
[With] mindfulness [of] Buddha connecting [to the] Buddha’s light, [the] disturbed mind transforms [to be the] peaceful mind. [For] fear [to] become great peace, [this] only needs [your] Faith [and] Aspiration [for] Practice.
Notes On Verses:
If we practise mindfulness of Buddha with a negative state of mind, that arises habitually or circumstantially, we might unknowingly project its negative qualities (such as sorrow, anxiety and fear) onto the Buddha’s name, thus perpetuating or magnifying these qualities instead.
Or if we practise mindfulness of Buddha only during others’ dying processes, funerals and such, the Buddha’s name might be subconsciously associated with pain and grief to some extent, as other ‘depressive’ qualities. This is why mindfulness of Buddha should be practised in daily life too, despite our ups and downs, to use it continuously and joyously, to uplift and purify our state of mind day by day.
It is helpful to remind ourselves of the twelve pure blessings embedded within the Buddha’s name (as listed in the ‘Related Articles’ below), as received through sincere mindfulness of it. When we practise wholeheartedly, thus connecting to his blessings firmly, our negative qualities will fade away, replaced by pure ones. The way to eradicate negative habitual tendencies is to substitute them with a pure habitual practice.
The ‘practice’ will not work, only if we remain caught up in a negative state of mind, running in circles, thus distracted from wholehearted mindfulness. To be mindful more sincerely, there can be ‘resetting’ of the mind first, by practising prostration and repentance before the Buddha. There can also be practice of the ‘Aspiration Prayer For Offering Light To The Thus Come One Of Twelve Lights’ (十二光如来供灯祈愿文) below, as a reminder of the Buddha’s blessings. For brevity, the verses above can be recited too.
