How Should Buddhists Handle Exhumation?
The following should be practised.
[1] Guidance (开示): Before exhumation, offer the post-death guidance at https://purelanders.com/wake before the grave.
[2] Support-Chanting (助念): Lead all present to recite Āmítuófó’s (阿弥陀佛) name sincerely throughout the exhumation. The guiding track at https://purelanders.com/mp3 can be played while doing so, but there must be personal recitation too, to offer sincere motivation and create actual blessings.
[3] Dedication (回向): Dedicate the meritorious virtues after exhumation but before cremation, with the verse at https://purelanders.com/wake.
[4] Sand (沙): Scatter Blessed Sand Of Golden Light (金光明沙) on cremated ashes in the urn while reciting Āmítuófó’s name. More on the sand can be learnt at section [26] of https://purelanders.com/2015/12/30/important-guidelines-2-during-dying-pure-land-passport-section-4b. Other blessed items like the Rebirth Blanket (往生被) and Mantra Wheels (咒轮) can be added in too.
To conclude, offer [3] Dedication again.
