[277] 吃荤的人能念佛吗?
[277] [Are] Meat-Eating People Able [To] Recite [Āmítuó]fó’s [Name]?
◎ 吃肉即无慈悲之心，此语乃为汝真实修行者说。若泛泛悠悠之人，虽不吃素，亦可念佛。
◎ [Summary]: Eating meat [is] then without [the] mind of loving-kindness [and] compassion. These words [are] thus for you true practitioners said. If [there are] those persons drifting [and] leisurely, although not eating [as] veg[etari]ans, [they] also can recite [Āmítuó]fó’s [name (阿弥陀佛)].
按理宜净素。虽势难即净，但宜少食。
According [to] principles, [you] should [be a] pure veg[etari]an. Although conditions [might be] difficult [to] immediately [be] pure, however, [there] should [be] less eating [of meat].
即食，亦当存一怜悯度脱之心。
If eating [meat, there] also should [be] retaining [the] one mind of sympathy [for] delivering [and] liberating [them].
非吃荤人念不得佛也。
[It is] not [that] meat-eating persons [are] not allowed [to] recite [Āmítuó]fó[’s name (阿弥陀佛)].

First Reply Letter [To] Layperson Mǎ Zōngdào
佛以慈悲为本，汝既吃肉，即无慈悲之心。此语乃为汝真实修行者说。
[The] Buddhas [are] with loving-kindness [and] compassion as [their] roots. You, thereupon eating meat, [are] then without [the] mind of loving-kindness [and] compassion. These words [are] thus for you true practitioners said.
若泛泛悠悠之人，虽不吃素，亦可念佛。非吃荤者，就念不得佛，不可不知。
If [there are] those persons drifting [and] leisurely, although not eating [as] veg[etari]ans, [they] also can recite [Āmítuó]fó[’s name (阿弥陀佛). It is] not [that] those eating meat, [are] then not allowed [to] recite [Āmítuó]fó[’s name. This] must not [be] not known.
