[34] What Is The Essential Meaning Of The Immeasurable Life Sūtra?《无量寿经》的要义是什么?

佛在摩竭提国,灵鹫山中,说阿弥陀佛,最初因地,弃国出家,发四十八愿。又复久经长劫,依愿修行。

[The] Buddha at Māgadhā Kingdom within Spiritual Vulture Mountain, spoke [of how A]mitā[bha] Buddha [i.e. Āmítuófó], first [on his] causal ground, renounced [his] kingdom [and] left [the] household [life, to] give rise [to his] forty-eight vows. Also again, over a long time passing long kalpas, relying on [his] vows [to] cultivate practice.

迨至福慧圆满,得成佛道。所感之世界庄严,妙莫能名。

Until reaching blessings [and] wisdom’s completion [and] perfection, attaining accomplishment [of the] Buddha path. That connected Land [Of Ultimate Bliss’] adornments, [are with] wonders not able [to be] named.

十方诸佛咸赞叹。十方菩萨,与回小向大之二乘,具足惑业之凡夫,咸得往生,等蒙摄受。是为《无量寿经》

[The] ten directions’ all Buddhas all highly praise [it. The] ten directions’ Bodhisattvas, with [those] of [the] Two Vehicles [who] dedicate [the] small towards [the] great, [and] ordinary beings who [are] complete [with] confusions [and] karmas, [can] all attain rebirth [there, to] equally receive [his] reception [and] guidance. This is [the] Immeasurable Life Sūtra.

乃于方等会上,普为一切人天凡圣,说《无量寿经》,发明弥陀往昔因行果德,极乐境缘种种胜妙,行人修证品位因果。

Thus, in [the] Right [And] Equal [Period’s] (方等时) assemblies, universally for all human [and] heavenly, ordinary [and] noble [beings], speaking [the] Immeasurable Life Sūtra, [to] clearly explain [A]mitā[bha Buddha’s] [i.e. Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛)] past causes [of] practices [and] fruits [of] virtues, [his Land Of] Ultimate Bliss’ [极乐世界] realm’s conditions’ all kinds [of] supreme wonders, practitioners’ cultivation [and] realisation, [with their] grades’ causes [and] effects.

此经乃说《华严》末后归宗之一著。说时虽在方等,教义实属华严。

This sūtra [is] thus spoken at the Flower Adornment [Sūtra’s]《华严经》end, [for] returning [to the] source, its one continuation. [Its] spoken period, although in [the] Right [And] Equal [Period, it is with] teachings truly belonging [to the] Flower Adornment [Period] (华严时).

《华严》唯局法身大士,此经遍摄九界圣凡。即以《华严》论,尚属特别,况余时乎?使如来不开此法,则末法众生,无一能了生死者。

[As the] Flower Adornment [Sūtra’s assembly was] only limited [to the] Dharma Body’s Great Beings [i.e. Bodhisattva Mahāsattva (菩萨摩诃萨)], this sūtra everywhere gathers [the] nine realms’ noble [and] ordinary [beings]. Then with [the] Flower Adornment [Sūtra] discussing, [it] still belongs [to that] special, moreover [during] other periods? If [the] Thus Come [One did] not open this Dharma [Door], then [will this Dharma]-Ending [Age’s] sentient beings, [be] without one [of] those able [to be] liberated [from the cycle of] birth [and] death.

大启愿轮,深明缘起,其唯《无量寿经》

[On the] great beginning [with] vows [turning the] wheel [of the Pure Land Dharma Door (净土法门), for] deeply understanding [its] conditions [for] arising, it [is] only [with the] Immeasurable Life Sūtra.
