生非易事
Birth [Is] Not [An] Easy Matter
【《阿弥陀经》中】佛告舍利弗：「不可以少善根福德因缘，得生彼国。」
[In the Amitā(bha) Sūtra, the] Buddha told Śāriputra, ‘[One] cannot, with few good roots [and] blessed virtues, [as] cause and condition, attain birth [in] that land.’
【按】前云：「若有信者，应当发愿。」 故信为入门之要务。
[Note]: [The] preceding says, ‘If they have Faith, should Vow.’ Thus, [giving rise to] Faith is [the] essential task of entering [the Pure Land Dharma] Door.
人若不信，便不能念佛。不能念佛，便是无善根、无福德、无因缘矣。如此甘露法门，乃竟于我无分，岂不痛惜？
Persons, if not [with] Faith, then [are] not able [to be] mindful [of Āmítuó]fó. Not able [to be] mindful [of Āmítuó]fó, then are without good roots, without blessed virtues, without cause [and] condition. In this way, [the] ambrosial Dharma Door, thus completely for me, [has] no part. How is [this] not lamentable?
余每诵经至此，不觉毛骨悚然，有时泪下如雨。
Every [time] I recite [this] sūtra up [to] here, unknowingly [will the] hair [on my back]bone standing, sometimes [with] tears falling like rain.
既复幡然自慰曰：「只愁不欲往生耳。」
Thereupon again, suddenly realising, [with] self-consolation saying, ‘[The] only worry [is] not desiring [to be] reborn [there]!’
果能信得阿弥陀佛真，便是我之善根。果能发得菩提心切，便是吾之福德。果能念得如来圣号，便是吾之因缘。安有不往生之理？
If able to [have] Faith [in] Āmítuófó truly, then are my those good roots. If able [to] give rise to [the] Bodhi Mind sincerely, then are my those blessed virtues. If able to recite [the] Thus Come [One’s] sacred name, then are my those cause [and] condition. How can there be reason of not [being] reborn?
【释迦牟尼佛于】《法华经》云：「心生大欢喜，自知当作佛。」
[Śākyamuni Buddha in the Wonderful] Dharma [Lotus] Flower Sūtra said, ‘[With your] mind giving rise [to] great joy, personally know [that you] will become [a] Buddha.’
