《净土十要》扬州重刻序
‘[The] Pure Land [Tradition’s] Ten Essentials’ Yángzhōu’s Recarving’s Preface
甲午年,春王月,望日,吾弟某,不辞劳苦,持古本《十要》而来。云及此书(现身说法)多谤禅宗。噫,若作谤会,是真谤矣。
[In] Jiǎwǔ Year’s Spring King [i.e. first lunar] Month’s Gazing [i.e. full moon] Day, my certain brother, not sparing hard work, held [an] ancient copy [of the] ‘Ten Essentials’ and came. Saying [that] to be involved [with] this book ([which] manifested [its] form [to] speak [the] Dharma) [is to be with] much slander [of the] Chán Tradition. Alas, if [with] regarding [of it] as slander understood, [this] is [the] true slander.
夫诸宗赞扬者,皆法也。所呵者,皆弊也。 如我禅宗呵斥教律净土者,尤甚。岂可竟作门庭人我斗争法会耶?
Those that all traditions praise, [are] all Dharma [Doors]. Those who berate [them, are] all wrong. If our Chán Tradition berates those [of the] Teachings, Vinaya [i.e. Precepts] [and] Pure Land [Traditions, this is] even more [wrong]. How can it be [that there is] going as far [to] become [our] sect’s door’s persons, [with] us fighting [over] Dharma understanding?
其实法法平等,一一皆同出于一源,我佛岂有自相矛盾之理乎?
Actually, [as] each [and every] one Dharma [Door is] equal, [with] each [and every] one, all similarly originating from one source, how can it be that our Buddha had [the] reason of contradicting himself?
故楞严二十五大士,位位第一。
Thus, [the] Śūraṅgama [Sūtra’s]《楞严经》twenty-five Great [Bodhisattva] Mahāsattvas, [are with] each [and every] one foremost.
独大势至一章,「与其同伦五十二菩萨」 证入。
Only Great Power Arrived [Bodhisattva’s] one Section [On Perfect Penetration With Mindfulness Of Buddha]《大势至菩萨念佛圆通章》, [was] ‘with his similar peers [of] fifty-two Bodhisattvas’ [representing all positions] realising [and] entering [it].
足验法门收机普,利益广,易于成就者,不言可知。
[This is] enough [to] prove [that this] Dharma Door gathers [spiritual] capacities universally, [has] those benefits wide, [with] ease of accomplishment, [that] without speaking, can [be] known.
忆我始祖释迦一代宣扬,处处指归。
Remember [that in] our founder Śākya[muni Buddha’s] one lifetime [of] propagation, everywhere [did he] point [towards] ‘return’ [to it].
此法乃当机之当机,又第一之第一,可以不必排抑矣。
[As] this Dharma [Door is] thus [that most] appropriate [for] capacities of [those] appropriate [for] capacities, also [that most] foremost of [those] foremost, [there] can [be] no need [to] reject [and] belittle [it].
故列祖弘通修持者,不一而足。
Thus, [if] listing those Patriarchs [who] propagate [and] transmit [this] practice, [they are] not [with] one then [as] enough, [for there are too many].
但我等多随流俗知见,出口入耳之学,未肯旷观古今,沉思默会其义。
However, we [are with] many following [the] flow [of] mundane ‘knowledge’ [and] views, [with] that learnt, [coming] out [from others’] mouths entering [our] ears, [but] not yet willing [to] extensively contemplate [those from] ancient [to] modern [times, to] deeply contemplate [and] silently understand their meanings.
谓愚夫愚妇之工夫耳。倘能入得此门,法法皆不相背,何触之有。请深思之可也。
[On so-]called [having] skills of foolish men [and] foolish women only, if [they are] able [to] attain entry [of] this [Dharma] Door, [and with] each [and every] one Dharma [Door], all not [turning their] backs [to] one another, what [is] that conflict existing? Please deeply contemplate this truly.
否则,满目尽是荆棘泥途,岂能博览诸宗,遍游法界,受百城烟水知识之益乎?
Otherwise, [if] filling [our] eyes, [to] be complete [with] thistles, thorns [and] mud, how can [we] be able [to] read extensively [on] all traditions, [to] everywhere travel [in the] Dharma realm, [to] receive [the] benefits of [a] hundred cities’ soot [and] water’s [i.e. inked] knowledge?
清光绪二十年甲午,七月佛欢喜日,书成,释观如,略序缘起于广陵藏经禅院之清泰室中。
[In] Qīng [Dynasty’s] Guāngxù’s 20th year Jiǎwǔ [1894 C.E.], [on the] seventh month’s Buddha’s Rejoice Day, [with] writing completed, [by] Shì Guānrú, [with] brief preface’s conditions [of] arising within Qīngtài Room of Guǎnglíng’s Zàngjīng Chán Monastery.
