Q&A

Should Homes Of The Deceased Be Purified? 亡者的家应当洒净吗?

Question: Is it necessary to practise Buddhist chanting with ‘sprinkling of blessed water to purify’ (洒净) the home of the deceased?

Answer: Some might believe in doing so to prevent the deceased’s consciousness from being attached, to thus haunt the home. However, there are two issues with such ‘purification’.

[1] Absence: If the deceased has already manifested clear auspicious signs (瑞相) of reaching Pure Land (净土), he or she will not be around to haunt. Thus, the above ‘purification’ is not needed. (Its remaining residents might already have daily ‘house-blessing’ with their Dharma practices too.)

[2] Presence: If the deceased has yet to reach Pure Land, all the more should there be continual sincere offering of guidance (开示) and support-chanting (助念) at home, where the deceased is most likely to be. Thus, the above ‘purification’ is not only not needed, it is also harmful if it keeps bardo (中阴) and ghostly beings away.

We do not want the deceased, who might wish to come home, to be unable to do so, due to being ‘exorcised away’, thus lingering around outside or elsewhere like a lonely wandering spirit in the wild (孤魂野鬼), where there is no one offering guidance and support-chanting for deliverance in time.
