[31] Top Ten Reasons To Study The ‘Record Of Great Master Yìnguāng’s Collected Writings’ Essence’
From ‘Record Of Great Master Yìnguāng’s Collected Writings’ Essence’s Preface:
[1] Sudden And Complete Teachings: The Record focuses on the Pure Land, this one Dharma Door, which truly is that silently agreeing with the Buddhas’ mind, the teaching that is utmost sudden and utmost complete (净土一门，实为默契佛心，至顿至圆之教乎).
[The essence of the Pure Land Dharma Door (净土法门) is thus the swiftest path to Buddhahood, with it taught in the Record by the Great Master who is our closest Pure Land Patriarch (净土祖师) in this Dharma-Ending Age (末法时期).]
[2] Wonders: The Record is not with high discussion of mind-nature, yet entirely manifesting the wonderful mind (不高谈心性，而全显妙心).
[3] Conciseness: The Record is for all with human affairs pressing, desiring and seeking, to be with one look seeing the whole picture for thorough understanding (人事倥偬，欲求一目全豹). [The Record carefully compiles concise excerpts from all of the Great Master’s teachings, as vetted by monastics who were close to him.]
[4] Rarity: The Record contains principles manifesting the true constant, with words without the repeated seen. With the utmost essential and utmost pure, the world has few like this companion (理显真常，语无重见，至精极粹，世鲜其俦).
[5] Uprightness: The Record is for uprighting people’s minds and helping to rule extremely well (正人心而辅郅治). [The Record also addresses serious misconceptions with right teachings.]
From ‘Words Of The Compiler-Editor’:
[6] Focus: The Record focuses on promoting the Pure Land, this one tradition, to universally gather all capacities (专提净土一宗，普摄群机), not leading to desiring to be liberated from the cycle of birth and death, not knowing the path (不致欲了生死，不知路头).
[7] Guide: The Record is the wisdom torch of all dark crossroads, and the compassionate ship of suffering’s ocean (皆昏衢之慧炬，苦海之慈航), like a great complete mirror, with every light interpenetrating (如大圆镜，光光交彻). [Key concerns of laypersons and monastics on worldly and world-transcending matters are addressed in the Record.]
[8] Essentials: The Record collects the Great Master’s words of utmost essence and utmost purity (掇其至精至粹之言), raising the essentials and catching the profound (提要钩玄).
[As some Great Virtuous One(s) (大德) say, ‘The Three Treasuries’ twelve divisions [of Buddhist teachings] can be not studied [if they are personally found to be too lengthy and profound], but Dharma Master Yìnguāng’s Collected Writings’ [Essence] cannot be not studied [as they are concise and simplified].’ (三藏十二部可以不读，印光法师文钞不可不读。) Since life is short and unpredictable, even if keen to study more teachings, the Record should be studied first.]
[9] Transmission: The Record is with the heart transmission of the Buddhas and Patriarchs (佛祖之心传), the path’s vein of noble and virtuous ones (圣贤之道脉), the profound purpose of the Pure Land (净土之奥旨), and the marvellous merits of upholding the Buddha’s name (持名之奇勋) [i.e. Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛)].
[10] Blessed Virtues: The Record is for obtaining blessed virtues that are immeasurable and boundless (获无量无边之福德), with the Great Master ‘chatting and laughing’, thinking through (与大师謦欬想通). [Studying the Record is the closest possible to listening to his key teachings in person.]
