[74] False Speaking Of Superior States Violates Great False Speech’s Precept

If relying on nothing [i.e. without foundation] building [a] towering pavilion, falsely speaking [of a] superior state, [this] then violates great false speech’s precept. Thus [with that] yet [to be] attained said [to be] attained, yet [to be] realised said [to be] realised, this transgression [is] more than killing, stealing [and] sex[ual misconduct by a] thousand million koṭis [of] times.

These persons, if not exerting [to] repent, [with] one breath not coming, [will] immediately fall [into] Avīci Hell, with them [being] able [to] ruin [the] Buddha’s teachings, [with] confusing [and] misleading [of] sentient beings thus.

You must [be] cautious [and] prudent. Of that state seen, [if] having one part, [there] must not [be] speaking [of that] one part’s one [bit] [i.e. 0.1 part (or 10 percent) of that one part], [and] also must not [be] speaking [of that part’s] nine [parts’] nine [bits] [i.e. 99.9 percent of that one part], [with] excess speaking also [a] transgression, less speaking also must not [be] done. Why thus? With friends yet [to] attain [knowing] others’ minds’ path’s eye, only able [to be] with that said for judging only.

[On] this kind [of] states, [if] towards friends] speaking, for confirming [if they are] heterodox [or] orthodox, right [or] wrong, [is] then without faults. If not for confirming, only desiring [to] self-boast, [this] also has faults. If towards all people speaking, then having faults.

Except [for] seeking friends [to] confirm, [this] entirely must not [be] spoken [of, with] speaking of [this], then afterwards, then [for] long, not able [to] attain this superior state [again]. This [is] practitioners’ first great pass, and [that the] Tiān[tái] [天台] teachings within frequently speak of.

Therefore, recently, extremely many practitioners [were] possessed [by] demons, all due [to being] with impetuous [and] hasty minds, hoping [for] superior states.

Not speaking [of] those states [that] are demonic, even if these states are superior states, once giving rise [to] greedy attachment [and] joy’s kinds [of] minds, then receiving harms, not receiving benefits, how much more [if] those states may not really be superior states?

If these people have restraint, without impetuous [and] hasty minds, [and] without greedy attachment’s minds, [with] seeing [of] all states, directly [the] same [as] yet [to] see [them, they will] both not give rise [to] joy [and] greedy attachment, [and] also not give rise [to] fear, astonishment [and] uncertainty.

[Do] not say superior states [that] appear have benefits, [as] even demonic states [that] appear also have benefits. Why thus? With not [being] by demons transformed, then able [to] make progress thus.

[It] must [be] known [that] persons learning [the] path, must [be] those [who] recognise that great. Otherwise, attaining small benefits will receive great harms.

[Do] not say this kind [of] states, [are] then true attainment [of the] five [super]normal [powers, as they] still must [be] set aside [from] consideration. Then can [there be] attainment [of] outflows’ exhaustion’s [super]normal [power].

[Note: Six Supernormal Powers (六神通/六通):

(i) Heavenly eye’s supernormal power (天眼通)
(ii) Heavenly ear’s supernormal power (天耳通)
(iii) Knowing others’ minds’ supernormal power (他心通)
(iv) Supernormal feet’s supernormal power (神足通) (of levitation, flight, teleportation and manifestation)
(v) Knowing past lives’ supernormal power (宿命通)
(vi) Outflows’ exhaustion’s supernormal power (漏尽通)

The Five Supernormal Powers (五神通/五通) are the five above without the sixth. Those with these five powers only are not yet liberated, still having outflows (有漏) of greed, anger and ignorance (贪嗔痴).

While it is possible for some from external paths (外道) to attain some of the Five Supernormal Powers, it is impossible for them to attain the sixth supernormal power if they do not learn, practise and realise the Buddha’s teachings.]

If once [with] greedy attachment, then [is it] difficult [to] make progress, perhaps even retrogressing [and] falling. [This] cannot [be] not known.
