[271] [What] Those Yet [To] Awaken [And] Yet [To] Realise Must Know
Those awakened, [are with] understanding distinct [and] clear, like opening [the] door [and] seeing [the] mountain, dispelling [the] clouds [and] seeing [the] moon. Also like those persons [with] clear eyes, personally seeing [the] return path. Also like those persons long poor, suddenly opening [a] treasury.
Those realised, [are] like [those] approaching [the] path [to] return home, resting [in their] steps [with] peaceful sitting [i.e. steady meditation]. Also like holding this treasury’s treasures, as wished receiving benefits.
[Of those] awakened, then [are] ordinary beings [with] great minds, able [to be] with [the] Buddhas [the] same.
[Note 1: Those with great minds are those who have given rise to the Bodhi Mind (菩提心), the vow to deliver one and all to Buddhahood.]
[Of those] realised, then [with those on the] First Ground not knowing [those on the] Second Ground, [their] positions of raising [their] feet [and] lowering [their] feet.
[Note 2: there are many different Bodhisattva stages of realisation leading towards Buddhahood, those less advanced are yet to know even little about the realisations of those more advanced.]
[Those] recognising these meanings of [those] awakened [and] realised, [then] naturally [will] not give rise [to] increased conceit, [and will] not give rise [to] retrogression.
[Note 3: There should be humility, recognising that most, if not all of us, are not even awakened, much less realised, thus needing more diligence and perseverance in learning and practice.]
Then [with their] minds of seeking birth [in the] Pure Land, [even with] ten thousand bulls, [they are] also difficult [to] pull [them] back.
[Note 4: Exactly since it is increasingly difficult to even be awakened in this defiled land (秽土), and in this Dharma-Ending Age (末法时期), we should aspire to reach Pure Land by the end of this life, where our spiritual progress towards Buddhahood will be expedited most swiftly.]
