[56] [The] Dharma Door Of ‘Gathering All Six Roots, [With] Pure Mindfulness [In] Continuous Succession‘
[If] you [do] not know [the] Pure Land Tradition’s objective, [there] should [be] relying [on] ‘One Letter [As A] Common Reply’, [with] that said, [to] give rise [to] true Faith, give rise [to] sincere Aspiration, [and with] sincere wholeheartedness, recite [the] Buddha’s name [i.e. Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛)]. [Do] not use contemplating [of the] mind’s mindfulness method, [as there] should [be] using gathering [of the] mind’s mindfulness method.
[In the] Śūraṅgama Sūtra, Great Power Arrived Bodhisattva said, ‘gathering all six roots, [with] pure mindfulness [in] continuous succession, [to] attain samādhi, this is [the] foremost.’
When mindful [of the] Buddha, [the] mind within (mind root) must [be] mindful very clearly, [the] mouth within (tongue root) must recite very clearly, [and the] ear within (ear root) must hear very clearly. [With the] mind, tongue [and] ear, [these] three roots, each [and every] one gathered with [the] Buddha’s name, then [the] eye also will not [to the] East look [and to the] West gaze, [the] nose also will not smell other kinds [of] smells, [and the] body also will not [be] idle [and] lazy. [This is] named as ‘gathering all six roots’.
‘Gathering all six roots’ then mindful, although not able [to] entirely [be] without false thoughts, compared [with] those not gathering, then within [the] mind [with] purity [much] more, thus [is this] named [as] ‘pure mindfulness’. [With] ‘pure mindfulness’, if able [to] constantly [have] ‘continuous succession’, without having interruption, naturally can [the] mind return [to] one point. [With] that shallow, then attaining wholeheartedness. [With] that deep, then attaining sānmèi [i.e. samādhi].
‘Samādhi’, also [is] another name of sānmèi. This [is] called Right Concentration, also called Right Attainment [i.e. samāpatti]. That Right Concentration, [is with the] mind peacefully abiding within [the] Buddha’s name, that called not again outwardly chasing. That Right Attainment, [is] that [by the] mind received, only [with the] state’s condition of [the] Buddha’s name, [while] all [other] states’ conditions, all cannot [be] obtained.
(Also, that Right Concentration, [is] that called [with] stillness [and] illumination both merged. That Right Attainment, [is] that called [with the] false subdued [and the] true appearing. See [the] ‘First Compilation’s Fifth Reply Letter [To A] Certain Yǒngjiā Layperson)
[If] able [to] truly [have] ‘gathering [of] all six roots’ then mindful, definitely [will] karmic obstacles [be] eliminated, good roots increase [and] grow.
Not needing contemplating [of the] mind, then [with the] mind naturally pure [and] clearly understood, again, how [can this] cause sickness of [the] mind’s fire [to] blaze upwards? You, as [an] ordinary being [with] that extremely heavy karmas’ power, falsely using [the] method of contemplating [the] mind, thus caused [it to be] like this. [As the] Dharma [Door] of contemplating [the] mind, [is] thus Teachings’ School’s Dharma [Door] of cultivating contemplation, [for] persons who [are] mindful [of the] Buddha, [it is] not very suitable [for their] capacities.
‘Gathering all six roots, [with] pure mindfulness [in] continuous succession’, thus universally covers [the] high, medium [and] low [roots]. If [for] noble or ordinary [beings, it is the] unsurpassable wonderful Dharma [Door] of all [their] capacities.
[It] must [be] known [that] ‘gathering all’, emphasises on hearing. Even if within [the] mind silently reciting, [it] also must [be] heard. With [the] mind within giving rise [to] reciting, then having sound’s form. [With] one’s ears, hearing that sound within one’s mind, [this] is still [with it] clearly [heard]. If able [to have] word [after] word, line [after] line, heard clearly, then [are the] six roots all returned to [be] one.
([With the] ear root [as] one gathered, all roots [are] unable [to] outwardly chase. Hopefully, [there] can [be] quick arrival [at] wholeheartedness without [being] scattered. See [the] ‘First Compilation’s Letter For Xú Fúxián’)
Comparing [with] those [who] cultivate other kinds [of] contemplation methods, [this] is [that] most reliable, [that] saves most efforts, [that] accords [with] principles [and] accords [with] capacities [the] most.
