[249] Consequences Of Being ‘Without Chán And Without Pure Land Practices’ 「

[Of] those ‘Without Chán [and] without Pure Land [practices], iron beds and bronze pillars [await them. For] ten thousand kalpas and thousands [of] lives, [with] no person [to] rely upon’, [there] are those saying [that] ‘without Chán [and] without Pure [Land]’, is the same as [to] immerse oneself [in] creating [evil] karmas, [and] not cultivate good dharmas, [which is the] great mistake [of] great mistakes.

[Note 1: These teachings are on ‘Chán And Pure Land’s Fourfold Explanations’ 《禅净四料简》: https://purelanders.com/2009/12/15/brief-on-four-categories, especially the fourth verse.]

[Of] those Dharma Doors immeasurable, only Chán [and] Pure [Land] are most suitable [for our] capacities. Those persons, since yet [to have] thorough awakening, also not seeking birth [in Pure Land], leisurely [and] superficially, cultivating other Dharma Doors, since not able [to have] concentration [and] wisdom all equal, [to] sever confusions [and] realise [the] true, [they] also have no way [to] rely [on the] Buddha’s compassionate power, [to] carry karmas [to be] reborn [in his Pure Land].

With all [of this] life’s cultivated meritorious virtues, connecting [to] future life’s human [or] heavenly [beings’] blessed rewards. [In this] present life, since without right wisdom, [in the] future life immediately following blessings [to be] transformed, [to be] infatuated [with the] five desires, [to] widely create evil karmas.

[Note 2: The Five Desires (五欲) are for (i) wealth, (ii) sex, (iii) fame, (iv) food and (v) sleep (财色名食睡).]

Already [having] created evil karmas, [they are] difficult [to] escape [from] evil retribution. [With] one breath not coming, immediately falling [into the] hells. With those ‘iron beds’ [and] ‘bronze pillars’ becoming clear, long passing long kalpas, lying down [and] embracing [them], with [these] repaying that greed [for] sounds [and] forms, killing lives [and] all other kinds [of] evil karmas. [With] all Buddhas [and] Bodhisattvas, although [with] extended compassion sympathising, [by] evil karmas obstructed thus, [they are] not able [to] attain [their] benefits.

Past people say that, ‘Of people cultivating practices, if without right Faith seeking birth [in the] Western [Pure Land Of Ultimate Bliss] [西方极乐世界], extensively cultivating all good, [this is] named as [creating the] third lifetime’s grievance.’ This [is] that said.

Because with this life cultivating practices, [in the] future life enjoying blessings, relying [on] blessings doing evil, then obtaining falling. [With] joys temporarily attained in [the] future life, [and] suffering long given in long kalpas. Even if [the] hells’ karmas [are] eliminated, also again transforming [to be] ghosts [and] animals. Desiring [to] recover [the] human body, [this is the] difficulty of difficulties.

Therefore, [the] Buddha with [his] hand [once] picked up soil, [and] asked Ānanda, ‘[Is] my hand’s soil more? [Or is the] great earth’s soil more?’

Ānanda replied [to the] Buddha, ‘[The] great earth’s soil [is] more.’

[The] Buddha said, ‘Those [who have] attained [the] human body, [are] like [the] soil within [my] hand. Those [who have] lost [the] human body, [are] like [the] great earth’s soil.’

‘[For] ten thousand kalpas and thousands [of] lives, [with] no person [to] rely upon.’ [That is] also close to [this] verse’s words, then simply saying this.

Those all Dharma Doors, focus [on] relying [upon] Self-power. [The] Pure Land Dharma Door, focuses [on] relying [upon the] Buddha’s power. All Dharma Doors [are with] confusions [and evil] karmas completely gone, then [with] liberation [from the cycle of] birth [and] death. [The] Pure Land Dharma Door, [is with] carrying [of] karmas [to be] reborn [there, to] immediately enter [the] noble stream.

[The Pure Land Tradition’s Sixth Patriarch] Great Master Yǒngmíng [净土宗六祖永明大师], fearing [that the] world [does] not know [these], thus specially [wrote the Fourfold] Explanations《四料简》, with [them for] teaching [in the] future. [They] can [be] called [the] confusing crossing point’s treasure raft, [and the] dangerous path’s guiding teacher.

[It is a] pity that [there are] people throughout the world, [who] muddleheadedly [and] carelessly read [them], without studying [them] thoroughly. These sentient beings [are with the] same class [of] evil karmas, by those connected!
