[29] Differences Between Those Foolish And Wise
Sentient beings’ habitual forces each have those partial [to]. Those foolish [are] partial to [those] ordinary and inferior. Those wise [are] partial to [those] high-spirited [and] respected.
If those foolish [are at] peace [with their] foolishness, not [with the] mixed [being] ‘wholehearted’, focus [on] cultivation [of] pure karmas, [they will in this] immediate life definitely obtain rebirth [in Pure Land, which] those so-called ‘foolish’ cannot reach.
If those wise [are] not with their wisdom self-relying [i.e. self-conceited], also thus following [the] practice of relying on [the] Buddha’s compassionate power, [to] seek birth [in his] Pure Land, [this] one [Dharma] Door, [this] is that called great wisdom.
If relying upon one’s views [and] understanding, looking down on Pure Land, [what] will [be] seen from kalpa to kalpa, [is] sinking [in the] evil paths. Desiring [to] again follow [the] fools of this day, then [is] liberation [that which] cannot be attained.
[Of] those deeply penetrating [the] nature [and] forms [of the] essential [and the] teachings, I truly love them [and] admire them, yet [do] not dare [to] comply with [them]. Why? With [a] short [well] rope, [it is] not able to draw water [from that] deep, [with a] small [piece of] paper, [it is] not able [to] wrap [that] big thus.
Not saying [that] all persons, all must imitate me [with] that done. If with me, similarly base [and] inferior, also desiring [to] learn [the] actions of great [and] extensive experts, directly desiring [for] wonderful awakening [of] one’s mind, [to] ‘overturn’ [the] teachings’ ocean, I fear [that not only is becoming a] great [and] extensive expert not able [to be] accomplished, instead by those foolish men [and] foolish women [with] earnest mindfulness [of] Buddha reborn [in his] Western [Pure Land Of Ultimate Bliss] [西方极乐世界] [as] those sympathised.
How can [this] not [be] doing [of that] ‘clever’, turning over [to] accomplish [the] clumsy, [wanting to] soar [to the] sky, instead falling [into a] deep abyss? With one sentence summarising this, saying, ‘Only personally examine that capacity.’
