五逆十恶,诽谤正法,生极惭愧,信愿念佛,亦蒙接引
[50] [Those With The] Five Heinous [Transgressions], Ten Evils [And] Slander [Of The] Right Dharma, [Who] Give Rise [To] Utmost Repentance, [With] Faith [And] Aspiration Mindful [Of The] Buddha, [Will] Also Receive [His] Reception [And] Guidance
【诽谤正法者,应忏悔生信】
[Those (Who) Slandered (The) Right Dharma, Should Repent (And) Give Rise (To) Faith]
《无量寿经》,乃至十念,咸皆摄受,唯除五逆,诽谤正法者。此约平时说,非约临终说。
[In the] Immeasurable Life Sūtra, [it is stated in his 18th Vow that] even with ten thoughts [of Āmítuófó’s (阿弥陀佛) name], all [will be] gathered [and] received [for rebirth in his Pure Land], only excluding those [with the] Five Heinous [Transgressions, who] slandered [the] Right Dharma. This [is] restricted [to] ordinary times spoken, not restricted [to when] approaching [life’s] end spoken.
[Note 1: The Five Heinous Transgressions (五逆罪) are (i) killing of father (杀父), (ii) killing of mother (杀母), (iii) killing of Arhat (杀阿罗汉), (iv) causing Buddha’s body to bleed (出佛身血), and (v) breaking up the harmonious Saṃgha (破和合僧).]
以其既有五逆之极重罪,又加以邪见深重,诽谤正法,谓佛所说超凡入圣、了生脱死,及念佛往生之法,皆是诓骗愚夫愚妇奉彼教之根据,实无其事。
With this, since having extremely heavy transgressions of [the] Five Heinous [Transgressions], also additionally with evil views deep [and] heavy, slandering [the] Right Dharma, saying [the] Buddha’s those spoken [teachings for] transcending [the] ordinary [to] enter [the] noble, [for] liberating [from the cycle of] birth [and] death, and [the] Dharma [Door] Of Mindfulness [Of] Buddha [for] rebirth [in Pure Land], are all [with the] basis of deceiving foolish men [and] foolish women [who] receive those teachings, [being] truly without these matters.
由有此极大罪障,纵或有一念十念之善根,由无极惭愧极信仰之心,故不能往生也。
Due to having this extremely great transgressive obstacle, even if perhaps having one thought [to] ten thoughts of good roots, due to [being] without [the] mind of utmost repentance [and] Faith, thus [are they] not able [to be] reborn [in Pure Land].
【五逆十恶,必谤正法】
[(Those With The) Five Heinous (Transgressions And) Ten Evils, Definitely Slander (The) Right Dharma]
《观经》下下品,乃约临终阿鼻地狱相现时说。虽不说诽谤正法,而其既五逆十恶,具诸不善,必不能不谤正法。
[The] Contemplation Sūtra’s Lowest [Of The] Low Grade, [is] thus restricted [to when] approaching [life’s] end, when Avīci Hell’s forms appear spoken. Although not speaking [of] slandering [the] Right Dharma, yet they, since [with the] Five Heinous [Transgressions and] Ten Evil [Karmas, are] complete [with] all [that is] not good, definitely not able [to] not slander [the] Right Dharma.
[Note 2: Avīci Hell (阿鼻地狱) is the Uninterrupted Hell (无间地狱) with (i) the realm’s fruit uninterrupted (趣果无间), (falling into it directly upon death), (ii) receiving of suffering uninterrupted (受苦无间), (iii) time uninterrupted (时间无间), (iv) life uninterrupted (生命无间) and (v) bodily form uninterrupted (身形无间).]
[Note 3: The Ten Evil Karmas (十恶业) are (i) killing lives (杀生), (ii) stealing (偷盗), (iii) sexual misconduct (邪淫), (iv) false speech (妄语), (v) double-tongued speech (两舌), (vi) abusive speech (恶口), (vii) frivolous speech (绮语), (viii) greedy desires (贪欲), (ix) anger (嗔恚) and (x) false views (邪见).]
若绝无谤法之事,何得弑阿罗汉、破和合僧、出佛身血乎?每有作此无谤法、彼有谤法解者,亦极有理。但既不谤法,何又行三种大逆乎?
If absolutely without [the] matter of slandering [the] Dharma, how can [there be] killing [of an] Arhat, breaking [of the] harmonious Saṃgha, [and] spilling [of the] Buddha’s body’s blood? Often are [there] those [with] regarding [of] these [as] without slandering [of the] Dharma, [versus] those [who] have slandering [of the] Dharma understood, [as] also [being] extremely reasonable. However, since not slandering [the] Dharma, how [can they] also practise [these] three kinds [of] great heinous [transgressions]?
【十念一念,亦蒙接引】
[(With) Ten Thoughts (To) One Thought, Also Receiving Reception (And) Guidance]
是知四十八愿,系约平时说。《观经》下下品,是约已见地狱至极之苦相说。
[It is] rightly known [that the] forty-eight vows, [are] connected [and] restricted [to] ordinary times spoken. [The] Contemplation Sūtra’s Lowest [Of The] Low Grade, is restricted [to when] already seeing [the] suffering forms of hell’s extreme suffering spoken.
其人恐怖不可言宣,一闻佛名,哀求救护,了无余念,唯有求佛救度之念。
These persons, [with] fear [that] cannot [be with] words announced, once hearing [the] Buddha’s name, imploring [to be] saved [and] protected, [are] completely without other thoughts, only [with the] thought of seeking [the] Buddha’s salvation [and] deliverance.
虽是乍闻乍念,然已全心是佛,全佛是心,心外无佛,佛外无心。故虽十念,或止一念,亦得蒙佛慈力,接引往生也。
Although [they] are [those] first hearing [then] first mindful, however, already [with ‘the] complete mind is [the] Buddha, [the] complete Buddha is [the] mind, [the] mind outside without [the] Buddha, [and the] Buddha outside without [the] mind.’ Thus, although [with] ten thoughts, or only one thought, also attaining receiving [of the] Buddha’s compassionate power, [to] receive [and] guide [for] rebirth [in his Pure Land].
【时事不同,摄否有异】
[(With) Times (And) Practices Not (The) Same, (With) Gathering Or Not Having Differences]
四十八愿,乃约平时说。《观经》下下品,乃约临终说。
[The] forty-eight vows, [are] thus restricted [to] ordinary times spoken. [The] Contemplation Sūtra’s Lowest [Of The] Low Grade, [is] thus restricted [to when] approaching [life’s] end spoken.
由时事不同,故摄否有异。谓为冲突,则成凿死卯子汉矣。
Due to [the] times [and] practices not [being the] same, thus [with] gathering or not having differences. Saying [there] is [a] conflict, [is] then [to] become chaps [to the] extreme boring [into a] mortise [i.e. attached to words literally without understanding their principles thoroughly].
