The Contemplation Sūtra’s Nine Grades (In Tabulated Lists)
For regular reflection on…
[a] what grade you might be born in with your current practice,
[b] what grade you can aspire to be born in with further practice, and
[c] what grade your family members and friends might be born in.
(The red criteria in each table’s first box are the Fundamental Causes (本因) of each grade, that can be used as personal practice checklists; except for the last three grades, which would rely mostly on the Supportive Conditions (助缘) listed.)
上品上生
[1.1] The High Grade’s High Births

[一] 本因
[i] Fundamental Causes
[1] 佛告阿难,及韦提希:「上品上生者,若有众生,愿生彼国者,发三种心,即便往生。何等为三?一者至诚心,二者深心,三者回向发愿心。具三心者,必生彼国。
[2] 复有三种众生,当得往生。何等为三?一者慈心不杀,具诸戒行。
[3] 二者读诵大乘方等经典。
[4] 三者修行六念,回向发愿,愿生彼国。
[5] 具此功德,一日乃至七日,即得往生。
[1] The Buddha told Ānanda and Vaidehi, ‘For those of High Grade’s High Births, if there are sentient beings, aspiring for birth in that land, giving rise to three kinds of minds, they will immediately attain rebirth. What are the three? First is the utmost sincere mind, second is the profound faithful mind, and third is the mind of dedication with giving rise of aspiration to be born. Those complete with these three minds, will definitely be born in that land.
[2] Moreover, there are three kinds of sentient beings, who will attain rebirth. What are the three? First are those with loving-kindness’ mind, who do not kill, and are complete with all precept practices.
[3] Second are those who study and recite the Great Vehicle’s vast and equal sūtras.
[4] Third are those who cultivate practice of the Six Mindfulnesses, dedicating with giving rise of aspiration, aspiring for birth in that land.
[5] Complete with these meritorious virtues, for one day and even seven days, they will immediately attain rebirth.
[二] 助缘
[ii] Supportive Conditions
[1] 生彼国时,此人精进勇猛故,阿弥陀如来,与观世音、大势至、无数化佛、百千比丘、声闻大众、无量诸天,七宝宫殿。
[2] 观世音菩萨,执金刚台,与大势至菩萨,至行者前。
[3] 阿弥陀佛,放大光明,照行者身。与诸菩萨,授手迎接。
[4] 观世音、大势至、与无数菩萨,赞叹行者,劝进其心。
[1] When being born in that land, these persons, with diligence courageous and powerful thus, Amitābha Thus Come One, with Contemplator Of The World’s Sounds, Great Power Arrived, innumerable manifested Buddhas, a hundred thousand Bhikṣus and Voice-Hearers’ great assembly, immeasurable all heavenly beings, and seven treasures’ palace halls appear.
[2] Contemplator Of The World’s Sounds Bodhisattva, holding a vajra dais, with Great Power Arrived Bodhisattva, arrive before these practitioners.
[3] Amitābha Buddha emits great bright light, that illuminates these practitioners’ bodies. With all Bodhisattvas, extending their hands to welcome and receive them.
[4] Contemplator Of The World’s Sounds, Great Power Arrived, with innumerable Bodhisattvas, will highly praise these practitioners, to encourage progress with their minds.
[三] 前果
[iii] Earlier Effects
[1] 行者见已,欢喜踊跃。自见其身,乘金刚台,随从佛后,如弹指顷,往生彼国。
[1] These practitioners, seeing this already, become joyful and enthusiastic. Personally seeing their bodies, riding upon vajra thrones, and following the Buddha from behind, like that within a fingersnap’s moment, they are reborn in that land.
[四] 后果
[iv] Later Effects
[1] 生彼国已,见佛色身,众相具足。
[2] 见诸菩萨,色相具足。
[3] 光明宝林,演说妙法。闻已,即悟无生法忍。
[4] 经须臾间,历事诸佛,遍十方界。
[5] 于诸佛前,次第受记。
[6] 还至本国,得无量百千陀罗尼门。是名上品上生者。
[1] Born in that land already, seeing the Buddha’s physical body, with all his forms complete.
[2] Seeing all Bodhisattvas, with their physical forms complete.
[3] With bright lights and treasure groves expounding the wonderful Dharma, having heard it already, immediately awakening to Non-Arising Of Dharmas’ Forbearance.
[4] Passing only a moment’s interval, one by one serving all Buddhas, everywhere in the ten directions.
[5] From all Buddhas, before them, one after another, receiving predictions.
[6] Returning to the original land, attaining immeasurable hundred thousands of Dhāraṇī doors. These are named as those with High Grade’s High Births.
上品中生
[1.2] The High Grade’s Middle Births

[一] 本因
[i] Fundamental Causes
[1] 上品中生者,不必受持读诵方等经典。
[2] 善解义趣,于第一义,心不惊动,
[3] 深信因果,不谤大乘。
[4] 以此功德,回向愿求生极乐国。
[1] For those of High Grade’s Middle Births, they do not need to accept and uphold, study and recite the vast and equal sūtras.
[2] With good understanding of their meanings and purposes, of the supreme truth, with their minds not startled,
[3] with profound faith in cause and effect, not slandering the Great Vehicle.
[4] With these meritorious virtues, dedicating with the aspiration of seeking birth in the Land Of Ultimate Bliss.
[二] 助缘
[ii] Supportive Conditions
[1] 行此行者,命欲终时,阿弥陀佛,与观世音、大势至、无量大众、眷属围绕,持紫金台,至行者前。
[2] 赞言:『法子,汝行大乘,解第一义,是故我今来迎接汝。』
[1] For those practising these practices, when their lives almost end, Amitābha Buddha, with Contemplator Of The World’s Sounds, Great Power Arrived, an immeasurable great assembly, and family members will surround, holding a purple-gold dais, arriving before these practitioners,
[2] praising by saying, “Dharma disciple, as you practise the Great Vehicle, and understand the supreme truth, therefore I have now come to welcome and receive you.”
[三] 前果
[iii] Earlier Effects
[1] 与千化佛,一时授手。行者自见坐紫金台,
[2] 合掌叉手,赞叹诸佛。
[3] 如一念顷,即生彼国七宝池中。
[1] With thousands of manifested Buddhas, at once extending their hands, these practitioners will personally see themselves seated upon purple-gold daises,
[2] with joined palms and crossed fingers, highly praising all Buddhas.
[3] As if in one thought moment, they will be immediately born in that land’s seven treasures’ ponds within.
[四] 后果
[iv] Later Effects
[1] 此紫金台,如大宝华,经宿则开。
[2] 行者身作紫磨金色,足下亦有七宝莲华。
[3] 佛及菩萨,俱时放光,照行者身。
[4] 目即开明,因前宿习,普闻众声,纯说甚深第一义谛。
[5] 即下金台,礼佛合掌,赞叹世尊。
[6] 经于七日,应时即于阿耨多罗三藐三菩提,得不退转。
[7] 应时即能飞行遍至十方,历事诸佛。
[8] 于诸佛所,修诸三昧。
[9] 经一小劫,得无生忍,现前受记。是名上品中生者。
[1] These purple-gold daises, like great treasure flowers, passing a night, then blossom.
[2] These practitioners’ bodies have pure purple-gold colour, and their feet below likewise have seven treasures’ lotus flowers.
[3] The Buddha and Bodhisattvas, together at the same time emit light, that illuminates these practitioners’ bodies.
[4] Their eyes immediately open to understanding, and because of former past habitual practices, universally hear all sounds, that purely speak [of the] extremely profound supreme truth.
[5] Immediately descending from their golden daises, they will prostrate to the Buddha, and with joined palms, highly praise the World-Honoured One.
[6] With passing of seven days, immediately then, of Anuttarā Samyak Saṃbodhi, attaining non-retrogression.
[7] Immediately then able to have travel by flight, to reach everywhere in the ten directions, one by one serving all Buddhas.
[8] At all Buddhas’ places, cultivating all samādhis.
[9] Passing one small kalpa, attaining Non-Arising’s Forbearance, manifesting in their presence to receive prediction. These are named as those with High Grade’s Middle Births.
上品下生
[1.3] The High Grade’s Low Births

[一] 本因
[i] Fundamental Causes
[1] 上品下生者,亦信因果,不谤大乘。
[2] 但发无上道心,以此功德,回向愿求生极乐国。
[1] For those of High Grade’s Low Births, they likewise believe in cause and effect, and do not slander the Great Vehicle.
[2] Only giving rise to the unsurpassable path’s mind, with these meritorious virtues dedicating with the aspiration of seeking birth in the Land Of Ultimate Bliss.
[二] 助缘
[ii] Supportive Conditions
[1] 行者命欲终时,阿弥陀佛,及观世音、大势至、与诸菩萨,持金莲华,化作五百佛,来迎此人。
[2] 五百化佛,一时授手。赞言:『法子,汝今清净,发无上道心,我来迎汝。』
[1] When these practitioners’ lives almost end, Amitābha Buddha, and Contemplator Of The World’s Sounds, Great Power Arrived, with all Bodhisattvas, holding a golden lotus flower, manifesting as five hundred Buddhas, will come to welcome these persons.
[2] These five hundred manifested Buddhas, at once extending their hands, praise by saying, “Dharma disciple, you now are pure, and having given rise to the unsurpassable path’s mind, I have come to welcome you.”
[三] 前果
[iii] Earlier Effects
[1] 见此事时,即自见身坐金莲华。
[2] 坐已华合,随世尊后,即得往生七宝池中。
[1] When seeing this matter, they immediately personally see their bodies seated upon golden lotus flowers.
[2] Seated already, the flowers close, following the World-Honoured One from behind, to immediately attain rebirth within the seven treasures’ ponds.
[四] 后果
[iv] Later Effects
[1] 一日一夜,莲华乃开。
[2] 七日之中,乃得见佛。
[3] 虽见佛身,于众相好,心不明了。于三七日后,乃了了见。
[4] 闻众音声,皆演妙法。
[5] 游历十方,供养诸佛。
[6] 于诸佛前,闻甚深法。
[7] 经三小劫,得百法明门,住欢喜地。是名上品下生者。是名上辈生想,名第十四观。」
[1] In one day and one night, the lotus flowers then open.
[2] Within seven days, then attaining sight of the Buddha.
[3] Although seeing the Buddha’s body, of all his forms’ excellences, their minds do not understand them clearly. Of three of seven days later, then understanding clearly the seen.
[4] Hearing all sounds, with all expounding the wonderful Dharma.
[5] Travelling in the ten directions, making offerings to all Buddhas.
[6] From all Buddhas, before them, hearing the extremely profound Dharma.
[7] Passing three small kalpas, attaining the Hundred Dharmas’ Clear Door, abiding on the Joy Ground. These are named as those with High Grade’s Low Births. These are named the High Grade’s Births’ Contemplation, named the Fourteenth Contemplation.’

中品上生
[2.1] The Middle Grade’s High Births

[一] 本因
[i] Fundamental Causes
[1] 佛告阿难,及韦提希:「中品上生者,若有众生,受持五戒,持八戒斋,修行诸戒,
[2] 不造五逆,无众过患。
[3] 以此善根,回向愿求生于西方极乐世界。
[1] The Buddha told Ānanda and Vaidehi, ‘For those of the Middle Grade’s High Births, if there are sentient beings, who accepted and uphold the Five Precepts, uphold the Eight Precepts for purification, cultivate practice of all precepts,
[2] not create the Five Heinous Transgressions, without all faults and suffering.
[3] With these good roots, dedicating with the aspiration of seeking birth in the Western Land Of Ultimate Bliss.
[二] 助缘
[ii] Supportive Conditions
[1] 临命终时,阿弥陀佛,与诸比丘,眷属围绕,放金色光,至其人所。
[2] 演说苦、空、无常、无我。赞叹出家,得离众苦。
[3] 行者见已,心大欢喜。
[1] When approaching their lives’ end, Amitābha Buddha, with all Bhikṣus, and family members will surround, emitting golden coloured light, arriving at where these persons are.
[2] Expounding on suffering, emptiness, impermanence and non-self. Highly praising departure from the household life, to attain departure from all suffering.
[3] These practitioners, seeing these already, will have minds with great joy.
[三] 前果
[iii] Earlier Effects
[1] 自见己身,坐莲华台,
[2] 长跪合掌,为佛作礼。
[3] 未举头顷,即得往生极乐世界,
[1] Personally seeing their bodies, seated upon lotus flower daises,
[2] long kneeling with joined palms, to the Buddha paying homage.
[3] Yet to raise their heads, just then, they will immediately attain rebirth in the Land Of Ultimate Bliss,
[四] 后果
[iv] Later Effects
[1] 莲华寻开。
[2] 当华敷时,闻众音声,赞叹四谛。
[3] 应时即得阿罗汉道,三明六通,具八解脱。是名中品上生者。
[1] with the lotus flowers soon blossoming.
[2] When the flowers blossom, they will hear all sounds, highly praising the Four Truths.
[3] Immediately then attaining the Arhat path, with the Three Insights and Six Supernormal Powers, complete with the Eight Liberations. These are named as those with Middle Grade’s High Births.
中品中生
[2.2] The Middle Grade’s Middle Births

[一] 本因
[i] Fundamental Causes
[1] 中品中生者,若有众生,若一日一夜持八戒斋,若一日一夜持沙弥戒,若一日一夜持具足戒,
[2] 威仪无缺。
[3] 以此功德,回向愿求生极乐国。
[4] 戒香熏修,
[1] For those of Middle Grade’s Middle Births, if there are sentient beings, if for one day and one night, uphold the Eight Precepts for purification, if for one day and one night, uphold the Śrāmaṇera Precepts, if for one day and one night, uphold the Complete Precepts,
[2] with majestic conduct without lack.
[3] With these meritorious virtues, dedicating for the aspiration of seeking birth in the Land Of Ultimate Bliss.
[4] With the precepts’ fragrance perfuming cultivation thus,
[二] 助缘
[ii] Supportive Conditions
[1] 如此行者,命欲终时,见阿弥陀佛,与诸眷属,放金色光,持七宝莲华,至行者前。
[2] 行者自闻空中有声,赞言:『善男子,如汝善人,随顺三世诸佛教故,我来迎汝。』
[1] these practitioners, when their lives almost end, will see Amitābha Buddha, with all family members, emit golden coloured light, holding a seven treasures’ lotus flower, arriving before these practitioners.
[2] These practitioners will personally hear a voice within the sky, praising by saying, “Good man, as you are a good person, who accordingly follow the three periods’ all Buddhas’ teachings thus, I have come to welcome you.”

[iii] Earlier Effects
[1] 行者自见坐莲华上,莲华即合,生于西方极乐世界。
[1] These practitioners will personally see themselves seated upon lotus flowers, with the lotus flowers immediately closing, for birth in the Western Land Of Ultimate Bliss.
[四] 后果
[iv] Later Effects
[1] 在宝池中,经于七日,莲华乃敷。
[2] 华既敷已,开目合掌,赞叹世尊。
[3] 闻法欢喜,得须陀洹。
[4] 经半劫已,成阿罗汉。是名中品中生者。
[1] In the treasure ponds within, with passing of seven days, the lotus flowers then blossom.
[2] With the flowers blossomed already, they will open their eyes, and with joined palms, highly praise the World-Honoured One.
[3] Hearing the Dharma with joy, attaining as Srotāpannas.
[4] Passing half a kalpa already, accomplishing as Arhats. These are named as those with Middle Grade’s Middle Births.
中品下生
[2.3] The Middle Grade’s Low Births

[一] 本因
[i] Fundamental Causes
[1] 中品下生者,若有善男子、善女人,孝养父母,
[2] 行世仁慈。
[1] For those of Middle Grade’s Low Births, if there are good men and good women, with filial piety support of their fathers and mothers,
[2] who practise worldly benevolence and loving-kindness.
[二] 助缘
[ii] Supportive Conditions
[1] 此人命欲终时,遇善知识,为其广说阿弥陀佛国土乐事,亦说法藏比丘四十八愿。
[1] These persons, when their lives almost end, meet good-knowing friends, for them extensively speaking of Amitābha Buddha Land’s blissful matters, likewise speaking of Dharma Treasury Bhikṣu’s forty-eight vows.
[三] 前果
[iii] Earlier Effects
[1] 闻此事已,寻即命终。譬如壮士屈伸臂顷,即生西方极乐世界。
[1] Having heard these matters already, soon then with their lives ending. For example, like a strong man bending or extending an arm in a short moment, they are immediately born in the Western Land Of Ultimate Bliss.
[四] 后果
[iv] Later Effects
[1] 经七日已,遇观世音,及大势至。
[2] 闻法欢喜,得须陀洹。
[3] 过一小劫,成阿罗汉。是名中品下生者。是名中辈生想,名第十五观。」
[1] Having passed seven days already, they will meet Contemplator Of The World’s Sounds, and Great Power Arrived.
[2] Hearing the Dharma with joy, attaining as Srotāpannas.
[3] Passing one small kalpa, accomplishing as Arhats. These are named as those with Middle Grade’s Low Births. These are named the Middle Grade’s Births’ Contemplation, named the Fifteenth Contemplation.’

下品上生
[3.1] The Low Grade’s High Births

[一] 本因
[i] Fundamental Causes
[1] 佛告阿难,及韦提希:「下品上生者,或有众生,作众恶业。
[2] 虽不诽谤方等经典,
[3] 如此愚人,多造恶法,无有惭愧。
[1] The Buddha told Ānanda and Vaidehi, ‘For those of Low Grade’s High Birth, perhaps are sentient beings, who did all evil karmas.
[2] Although not slandering the vast and equal sutras.
[3] These such foolish persons, created many evil dharmas, not having shame.
[二] 助缘
[ii] Supportive Conditions
[1] 命欲终时,遇善知识,为说大乘十二部经首题名字。
[2] 以闻如是诸经名故,除却千劫极重恶业。
[3] 智者复教合掌叉手,称『南无阿弥陀佛』。
[1] When their lives almost end, they meet good-knowing friends, for them speaking the Great Vehicle’s twelve divisions’ sūtras’ leading titles’ words.
[2] With hearing such all sūtras’ names thus, they eliminate a thousand kalpas’ extremely heavy evil karma.
[3] Those wise again teach them to join their palms with crossed fingers, to recite “Námó Āmítuófó”.
[三] 前果
[iii] Earlier Effects
[1] 称佛名故,除五十亿劫生死之罪。
[2] 尔时彼佛,即遣化佛、化观世音、化大势至,至行者前。赞言:『善男子,以汝称佛名故,诸罪消灭,我来迎汝。』
[3] 作是语已,行者即见化佛光明,遍满其室。
[4] 见已欢喜,即便命终。
[5] 乘宝莲华,随化佛后,生宝池中。
[1] Reciting the Buddha’s name thus, eliminating fifty koṭis’ kalpas’ transgressions of births and deaths.
[2] At that time, that Buddha immediately sends a manifested Buddha, manifested Contemplator Of The World’s Sounds and manifested Great Power Arrived, to arrive before these practitioners, praising by saying, “Good man, with your reciting of the Buddha’s name thus, with all transgressions eliminated, I have come to welcome you.”
[3] Having made this statement already, these practitioners immediately see the manifested Buddha’s bright light, everywhere filling their rooms.
[4] Seeing it already, with joy, immediately then, their lives end.
[5] Riding upon treasure lotus flowers, following the manifested Buddha from behind, to be born within treasure ponds.
[四] 后果
[iv] Later Effects
[1] 经七七日,莲华乃敷。
[2] 当华敷时,大悲观世音菩萨,及大势至菩萨,放大光明,住其人前,为说甚深十二部经。
[3] 闻已信解,发无上道心。
[4] 经十小劫,具百法明门,得入初地。是名下品上生者。」
[1] With passing seven of seven days, the lotus flowers then blossom.
[2] When the flowers blossom, the great compassionate Contemplator Of The World’s Sounds Bodhisattva, and Great Power Arrived Bodhisattva, will emit great bright light, and abide before these persons, for them speaking the extremely profound twelve divisions’ sūtras.
[3] Having heard them already, with faith and understanding, they will give rise to the unsurpassable path’s mind.
[4] Passing ten small kalpas, complete with the Hundred Dharmas’ Clear Door, attaining entry onto the First Ground. These are named as those with Low Grade’s High Births.’
下品中生
[3.2] The Low Grade’s Middle Births

[一] 本因
[i] Fundamental Causes
[1] 佛告阿难,及韦提希:「下品中生者,或有众生,毁犯五戒、八戒、及具足戒。
[2] 如此愚人,偷僧祇物,盗现前僧物,
[3] 不净说法,无有惭愧,以诸恶业而自庄严。
[1] The Buddha told Ānanda and Vaidehi, ‘For those of Low Grade’s Middle Births, perhaps are sentient beings, who broke and violated the Five Precepts, Eight Precepts, and Complete Precepts.
[2] These such foolish persons, stole the ten directions’ Saṃgha’s objects, robbed [the] presently manifested Saṃgha’s objects,
[3] and impurely spoke the Dharma, not having shame, with all evil karmas, thus “self-adorned”.
[二] 本果
[ii] Original Effects
[1] 如此罪人,以恶业故,应堕地狱。
[2] 命欲终时,地狱众火,一时俱至。
[1] Thus, these transgressing persons, with their evil karma thus, should fall into hell.
[2] When their lives almost end, hell’s all fires, at once together arrive.
[三] 助缘
[iii] Supportive Conditions
[1] 遇善知识,以大慈悲,即为赞说阿弥陀佛十力威德,广赞彼佛光明神力。
[2] 亦赞戒、定、慧、解脱、解脱知见。
[1] Meeting good-knowing friends, who with great loving-kindness and compassion, immediately for them praising and speaking of Amitābha Buddha’s Ten Powers’ majestic virtues, extensively praising that Buddha’s bright light’s supernormal powers.
[2] Likewise praising precepts, concentration, wisdom, liberation and liberation’s knowledge with insight.
[四] 前果
[iv] Earlier Effects
[1] 此人闻已,除八十亿劫生死之罪。
[2] 地狱猛火,化为清凉风,吹诸天华。华上皆有化佛菩萨,迎接此人。
[3] 如一念顷,即得往生七宝池中莲华之内。
[1] These persons, having heard these already, eliminate eighty koṭis’ kalpas’ transgressions of births and deaths.
[2] Hell’s fierce fires transform to be cool breezes, blowing all heavenly flowers. The flowers above all have manifested Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, welcoming and receiving these persons.
[3] As if in one thought moment, they immediately attain rebirth within seven treasures’ ponds’ lotus flowers inside.
[五] 后果
[v] Later Effects
[1] 经于六劫,莲华乃敷。
[2] 观世音、大势至,以梵音声,安慰彼人,为说大乘甚深经典。
[3] 闻此法已,应时即发无上道心。是名下品中生者。」
[1] With passing of six kalpas, the lotus flowers then blossom.
[2] Contemplator Of The World’s Sounds, Great Power Arrived, with pure voices, comfort those persons, for them speaking the Great Vehicle’s extremely profound sūtras.
[3] Having heard these Dharma teachings already, they immediately then give rise to the unsurpassable path’s mind. These are named as those of Low Grade’s Middle Births.’
下品下生
[3.3] The Low Grade’s Low Births

[一] 本因
[i] Fundamental Causes
[1] 佛告阿难,及韦提希:「下品下生者,或有众生,作不善业,五逆十恶,
[2] 具诸不善。
[1] The Buddha told Ānanda and Vaidehi, ‘For those of Low Grade’s Low Births, perhaps are sentient beings, who did unvirtuous karmas, the Five Heinous Transgressions and the Ten Evil Karmas,
[2] complete with] all the unvirtuous.
[二] 本果
[ii] Original Effects
[1] 如此愚人,以恶业故,应堕恶道,
[2] 经历多劫,受苦无穷。
[1] These such foolish persons, with evil karma thus, should fall into evil paths,
[2] to pass through many kalpas, with receiving of suffering without end.
[三] 助缘
[iii] Supportive Conditions
[1] 如此愚人,临命终时,遇善知识,种种安慰,为说妙法,教令念佛。
[2] 彼人苦逼,不遑念佛。善友告言:『汝若不能念彼佛者,应称「无量寿佛」。如是至心,令声不绝,具足十念,称「南无阿弥陀佛」。』
[1] These such foolish persons, when approaching their lives’ end, meet good-knowing friends, offering all kinds of comfort, for them speaking the wonderful Dharma, teaching to enable them to be mindful of Buddha.
[2] Those persons, if by suffering bothered, too flustered to be mindful of Buddha, a good friend speaks these words, “If you are those not able to be mindful of that Buddha, you should recite ‘Immeasurable Life Buddha’. Thus with the sincere mind, enable its sound to not be interrupted, to complete ten thoughts, reciting ‘Námó Amitā[bha/yus] Buddha’ [i.e. Námó Āmítuófó].”

[1] 称佛名故,于念念中,除八十亿劫生死之罪。
[2] 命终之时,见金莲华,犹如日轮,住其人前。
[3] 如一念顷,即得往生极乐世界。
[1] Reciting the Buddha’s name thus, in thought to thought within, eliminating eighty koṭis’ kalpas’ transgressions of births and deaths.
[2] When their lives are ending, they will see golden lotus flowers, similar to the sun disc, abiding before these persons.
[3] As if in one thought moment, they will immediately attain rebirth in the Land Of Ultimate Bliss.
[五] 后果
[v] Later Effects
[1] 于莲华中,满十二大劫,莲华方开。
[2] 观世音、大势至,以大悲音声,为其广说诸法实相,除灭罪法。
[3] 闻已欢喜,应时即发菩提之心。是名下品下生者。是名下辈生想,名第十六观。」
[1] Within the lotus flowers, completing twelve great kalpas, the lotus flowers then blossom.
[2] Contemplator Of The World’s Sounds and Great Power Arrived, with great compassionate voices, for them extensively speak of all dharmas’ true nature, eliminating transgressive dharmas.
[3] Having heard this already, with joy, immediately then giving rise to the Bodhi Mind. These are named as those with Low Grade’s Low Births. These are named as Low Grade’s Births’ Contemplation, named the Sixteenth Contemplation.’
