大佛顶首楞严经大势至菩萨念佛圆通章
[The] Great Buddha Crown’s Śūraṅgama Sūtra’s Section [On] Great Power Arrived Bodhisattva’s Perfect Penetration [With] Mindfulness [Of] Buddha  

唐天竺沙门般刺蜜谛译
[By] Táng [Dynasty’s] Śramana Parāmiti [from] India translated [from Sanskrit to Chinese]

新加坡优婆塞沈时安译
[By] Singapore’s Upāsaka Shen Shi’an retranslated [from Chinese to English in Jan 2020 C.E.]

大势至法王子,与其同伦五十二菩萨,即从座起, 顶礼佛足,  而白佛言:

Great Power Arrived, [the] Dharma Prince [i.e. Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva], with his similar peers [of] fifty-two Bodhisattvas, immediately from [their] seats arose, prostrated [at the] Buddha’s feet, and to [the] Buddha said,

「我忆往昔,恒河沙劫,有佛出世,名无量光。

‘I recollect, [in the] past, [of the] Ganges river’s sands [of] kalpas [ago, there] was [a] Buddha [who] arose [in the] world, named “Immeasurable Light”.

十二如来,相继一劫,其最后佛,名超日月光。

Twelve Thus Come [Ones, in] continuous succession [arose in] one kalpa, [and] its last Buddha, [is] named “Surpassing Sun [And] Moon Light”.

彼佛教我念佛三昧。

That Buddha taught me [the] Samādhi [From] Mindfulness [Of] Buddha.

譬如有人,一专为忆,一人专忘。

For example, [there] are persons, [with] one focused on recollecting, [and] one person focused [on] forgetting.

如是二人,若逢不逢,或见非见。

Thus, [these] two persons, if encountering [each other, is as if] not encountering [each other], or [if] seeing [each other, is as if] not seeing [each other].

二人相忆,二忆念深,如是乃至,从生至生,同于形影,不相乖异。

[If these] two persons recollect each other, [with the] duo’s recollection [and] mindfulness [being] deep, thus, even from life to life, similar to form [and] shadow, [they will] not depart [from] each other.

十方如来,怜念众生,如母忆子。

[The] ten directions’ Thus Come [Ones, are] sympathetically mindful [of] sentient beings, like [a] mother recollecting [her] child.

若子逃逝,虽忆何为?

If [the] child runs away, although [there is] recollection, what [would it be] for?

子若忆母,如母忆时,母子历生,不相违远。

[The] child, [if] recollecting [the] mother, like when [the] mother recollects, [the] mother [and] child, passing through life, [will] not be far apart [from] each other.

若众生心,忆佛念佛,现前当来,必定见佛。

If sentient beings’ minds, recollect [Amitābha] Buddha, [or] are mindful [of the] Buddha[‘s name: “Āmítuófó”], now [or in the] future, [they] will definitely see [the] Buddha.

去佛不远,不假方便,自得心开。

[With the] Buddha not far away, not needing skilful means, [they will, by] themselves, attain awakening [of their] minds.

如染香人,身有香气,此则名曰香光庄严。

Like [a] person perfumed [by] incense, [whose] body has fragrance, this [is] thus named “Adornment [With] Fragrance [And] Light”.

我本因地,以念佛心,入无生忍。

I, [when on the] fundamental causal ground, with [my] mind [being] mindful [of the] Buddha, entered [the] Patience [Of] Non-Birth.

今于此界,摄念佛人,归于净土。

Now in this world, [I] gather people mindful [of the] Buddha, [for] “return” to [his] Pure Land.

佛问圆通,我无选择,都摄六根,净念相继,得三摩地,斯为第一。」

[The] Buddha asked [about the] Perfect Penetration, [and] I [have] no other choice, [than to] gather [in the] six roots, [with] pure mindfulness [in] continuous succession, [to] attain Samādhi, as this [is the] foremost [method].’
