愿生偈
Verses [On] Aspiration [For] Birth

世尊我一心,

归命尽十方,
无碍光如来,
愿生安乐国。

[Before the] World-Honoured [One], I, [with] wholeheartedness,
take refuge [for] life [in the one who] exhausts [the] ten directions,
[as the] Unimpeded Light Thus Come [One],
vowing [to be] born [in his] Land [Of] Peace [And] Bliss.

我依修多罗,
真实功德相,
说愿偈总持,
与佛教相应。

I, relying [upon the] sūtra’s
true meritorious virtues’ forms,
speak [these] aspiration verses [which] totally uphold [them],
with [the] Buddha’s teachings corresponding.

观彼世界相,
胜过三界道,
究竟如虚空,
广大无边际。

Contemplate that land’s forms,
[to] surpass [the] three realms’ paths,
ultimate like empty space,
vast, great [and] without boundaries.

正道大慈悲,
出世善根生,
净光明满足,
如镜日月轮。

[From the] right path’s great loving-kindness, compassion,
[and] world-transcending good roots born,
[with] pure bright light full [and] adequate,
like [a] mirror, sun [or] moon disk.

备诸珍宝性,
具足妙庄严,
无垢光焰炽,
明净曜世间。

Perfect [with] many precious treasures’ natures,
complete [with] wonderful adornments,
[with] stainless light’s flames ablaze,
bright [and] pure, glorious [throughout the] world.

宝性功德草,
柔软左右旋,
触者生胜乐,
过迦旃邻陀。

[The] treasures’ natures’ meritorious virtues’ grasses,
gently [and] supplely [to] left [and] right twirl,
[with] those [who] touch [them] giving rise [to] supreme bliss,
[that] surpasses [that from] kācalindi [grass].

宝华千万种,
弥覆池流泉,
微风动华叶,
交错光乱转。

[With] treasure flowers [of] thousands [of] tens [of] thousand kinds,
fully covering [the] ponds [and] flowing springs,
[when] gentle breezes move [the] flowers [and] leaves,
interweaving lights mix [and] transform.

宫殿诸楼阁,
观十方无碍,
杂树异光色,
宝栏遍围绕。

[From] palatial halls [and] all towering pavilions,
observing [the] ten directions without obstacles,
[of] various trees’ different lights [and] colours,
[with] treasure balustrades [that] completely surround.

无量宝交络,
罗网遍虚空,
种种铃发响,
宣吐妙法音。

Immeasurable treasures intersect,
[in] nets pervading empty space,
[with] all kinds [of] bells emitting sounds,
proclaiming aloud wonderful Dharma sounds.

雨华衣庄严,
无量香普熏,
佛慧明净日,
除世痴闇冥。

Raining flowers [and] clothing magnificent,
[with] immeasurable fragrance universally permeating,
[the] Buddha’s wisdom [is] bright [and] pure [like the] sun,
eradicating [the] world [of] ignorance’s darkness.

梵声悟深远,
微妙闻十方,
正觉阿弥陀,
法王善住持。

[The] pure voice [of] awakening profound [and] lasting,
[with] subtle wonders [is] heard [in the] ten directions,
[from the] rightly awakened Amitā[bha Buddha],
[the] Dharma King [who] well presides [there].

如来净华众,
正觉华化生,
爱乐佛法味,
禅三昧为食。

[The] Thus Come [One’s] pure flower assembly,
[are from] right awakening’s flowers’ transformed births,
[with] love [and] joy [for the] Buddha’s Dharma’s flavours,
[and] meditative samādhi as food.

永离身心恼,
受乐常无间,
大乘善根界,
等无讥嫌名。

Forever departed [from] afflictions [of] body [and] mind,
receiving bliss eternally without interruption,
[in this] Great Vehicle’s roots’ realm,
[all are] equal [and] without [the] contemptuous’ names.

女人及根缺,
二乘种不生,
众生所愿乐,
一切能满足。

Women and [those with] roots lacking,
[and those of the] Two Vehicles’ seeds [are] not born [there],
[of] that sentient beings aspire joyfully [for],
all [are] able [to be] fulfilled.

是故愿生彼,
阿弥陀佛国,
无量大宝王,
微妙净华台。

Therefore, vow [to be] born [in] that
Amitā[bha] Buddha’s land’s
immeasurable great treasures’ king’s
subtle, wonderful [and] pure] flower platforms.

相好光一寻,
色像超群生,

如来微妙声,
梵响闻十方。

[With] forms’ excellences’ light [of] one yojana,
[his] form’s image surpasses sentient beings’,
[the] Thus Come [One’s] subtle [and] wonderful voice’s
pure sound [can be] heard [in the] ten directions.

同地水火风,
虚空无分别,
天人不动众,
清净智海生。

Similar [to] earth, water, fire, wind,
[and] empty space, without discrimination,
heavenly [and] human [beings of the] immovable assembly,
[are from] pure wisdom’s ocean born.

如须弥山王,
胜妙无过者,
天人丈夫众,
恭敬绕瞻仰。

Like [the] Sumeru Mountain King,
[with] supreme wonders without those surpassing,
heavenly [and] human [beings in the] male assembly,
reverently circumambulate [and] gaze [upon him].

观佛本愿力,
遇无空过者,
能令速满足,
功德大宝海。

Contemplating [Amitābha] Buddha’s original vows’ power,
[and] encountering [them, are] without those in vain,
able [to] enable swift fulfilment,
[with] meritorious virtues’ great treasures’ ocean.

安乐国清净,
常转无垢轮,
化佛菩萨日,
如须弥住持。

[The] Land [Of] Peace [And] Bliss [is] pure,
constantly turning [the] stainless [Dharma] wheel,
manifesting Buddhas [and] Bodhisattvas [like the] sun,
like Sumeru [always] presiding.

无垢庄严光,
一念及一时,
普照诸佛会,
利益诸群生。

Stainless magnificent light,
[in] each thought and each moment,
universally illuminates all [of the] Buddha’s assembly,
[to] benefit all sentient beings.

雨天乐华衣,
妙香等供养,
赞诸佛功德,
无有分别心。

Raining heavenly music, flowers [and] clothing,
[with] wonderful incense [and] other offerings,
[for] praising all Buddhas’ meritorious virtues,
without having [the] discriminating mind.

何等世界无,
佛法功德宝,
我愿皆往生,
示佛法如佛。

[In] what[ever] world without
Buddhas’ [and] Dharma’s meritorious virtues’ treasures,
I vow, [to] all [be] reborn [in],
[to] guide [with the] Buddha’s Dharma like [the] Buddhas.

我作论说偈,
愿见弥陀佛,
普共诸众生,
往生安乐国。

I, [having] composed [this] treatise [to] speak [these] verses,
vow [to] meet Amitā[bha] Buddha,
universally together, [with] all sentient beings,
[to be] reborn [in his] Land [Of] Peace [And] Bliss.

无量寿修多罗章句,我以偈颂总说竟。

[Of the] Immeasurable Life Sūtra’s sections [and] sentences, I with verses, [have in] summary spoken [of them] completely.

Explanation [Of] Verses

论曰:

[The] treatise states:

此愿偈明何义?示现观彼安乐世界,见阿弥陀如来,愿生彼国故。

[With] these aspiration verses clear, what [are their] meanings? [They are for] guiding present contemplation [of] that Land [Of] Peace [And] Bliss, [to] meet Amitā[bha Buddha] Thus Come [One], vowing [for] born [in] that land thus.

云何观?云何生信心?若善男子、善女人,修五念门行成就,毕竟得生安乐国土,见彼阿弥陀佛。何等五念门?

How [to] contemplate? How [to] give rise [to the] mind [of] Faith? If good men, [and] good women, [with] cultivation [of the] Five Mindfulness Doors’ practices accomplished, [they will] ultimately attain birth [in the] Land [Of] Peace [And] Bliss, [to] meet that Amitā[bha] Buddha. What [are the] Five Mindfulness Doors?

[1] 一者礼拜门,
[2] 二者赞叹门,
[3] 三者作愿门,
[4] 四者观察门,
[5] 五者回向门。

[1] First [is the] Prostration Door.
[2] Second [is the] Praise Door.
[3] Third [is the] Vow-Making Door.
[4] Fourth [is the] Observation Door.
[5] Fifth [is the] Dedication Door.

[1] 云何礼拜?身业礼拜阿弥陀如来、应、正遍知。为生彼国意故。
[2] 云何赞叹?口业赞叹。称彼如来名,如彼如来光明智相,如彼名义,欲如实修行相应故。
[3] 云何作愿?心常作愿。一心专念,毕竟往生安乐国土,欲如实修行奢摩他故。
[4] 云何观察?智慧观察。正念观彼,欲如实修行毗婆舍那故。彼观察有三种。何等三种?

[1] How [to practise] prostration? [With] bodily karma prostrating [to] Amitā[bha Buddha] Thus Come [One, the One] Worthy [Of] Offerings, [the] Truly All-Knowing [One]. For birth [in] that land’s intention thus.
[2] How [to practise] praise? [With] verbal karma praising. Praising that Thus Come [One’s] name, like that Thus Come [One’s] bright light [and] wisdom’s forms, like that name’s meanings, desiring [to], as truly, cultivate practices [that] correspond thus.
[3] How [to practise] vow-making? [With the] mind frequently making vow. Wholehearted [with] focused mindfulness, ultimately [to be] reborn [in the] Land [Of] Peace [And] Bliss, desiring [to], as truly, cultivate practice [of] Śamatha thus.
[4] How [to practise] observation? [With] wisdom’ observing. [With] right mindfulness contemplating that, desiring [to], as truly, cultivate practice [of] Vipaśyanā thus. That observation has three kinds. What [are the] three kinds?

[1] 一者观察彼佛国土庄严功德,
[2] 二者观察阿弥陀佛庄严功德,
[3] 三者观察彼诸菩萨庄严功德。

[1] First [is] observation [of] that Buddha land’s magnificent meritorious virtues.
[2] Second [is] observation [of] Amitā[bha] Buddha’s magnificent meritorious virtues.
[3] Third [is] observation [of] that [land’s] all Bodhisattvas’ magnificent meritorious virtues.

[5] 云何回向?不舍一切苦恼众生,心常作愿回向为首,得成就大悲心故。

[5] How [to practise] dedication? Not forsaking all sentient beings [with] suffering [and] afflictions, [with the] mind constantly making vow, [to] dedicate [meritorious virtues] as foremost, [to] attain accomplishment [of the] great compassionate mind thus.

云何观察彼佛国土庄严功德?彼佛国土庄严功德者,成就不可思议力故。如彼摩尼如意宝性,相似相对法故。观察彼佛国土庄严功德成就者,有十七种,应知。何等十七?

How [to practise] observation [of] that Buddha land’s magnificent meritorious virtues? That Buddha land magnificent meritorious virtues, [are] accomplished [by] inconceivable power thus. Like that [of a] maṇi wish-fulfilling gem’s nature, [in] similar [and] distinct ways thus. Observe that Buddha land’s magnificent meritorious virtues, [to] have seventeen kinds, [that] should [be] known. What are [the] seventeen?

[1] 一者庄严清净功德成就,
[2] 二者庄严量功德成就,
[3] 三者庄严性功德成就,
[4] 四者庄严形相功德成就,
[5] 五者庄严种种事功德成就,
[6] 六者庄严妙色功德成就,
[7] 七者庄严触功德成就,
[8] 八者庄严三种功德成就,
[9] 九者庄严雨功德成就,
[10] 十者庄严光明功德成就,
[11] 十一者庄严妙声功德成就,
[12] 十二者庄严主功德成就,
[13] 十三者庄严眷属功德成就,
[14] 十四者庄严受用功德成就,
[15] 十五者庄严无诸难功德成就,
[16] 十六者庄严大义门功德成就,
[17] 十七者庄严一切所求满足功德成就。

[1] First [is its] magnificent purity’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[2] Second [is its] magnificent quantity [of] meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[3] Third [is its] magnificent nature [of] meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[4] Fourth [is its] magnificent shapes’ [and] forms’ meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[5] Fifth [is its] magnificent all kinds [of] matters’ meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[6] Sixth [is its] magnificently wonderful forms’ meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[7] Seventh [is its] magnificent touches’ meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[8] Eighth [is its] magnificent three kinds of meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[9] Ninth [is its] magnificent rain’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[10] Tenth [is its] magnificent bright light’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[11] Eleventh [is its] magnificent wonderful sounds’ meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[12] Twelfth [is its] magnificent master’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[13] Thirteenth [is its] magnificent family members’ meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[14] Fourteenth [is its] magnificent use[ful] enjoyments’ meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[15] Fifteenth [is it] magnificentl[y being] without all difficulties’ meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[16] Sixteenth [is its] magnificent great meaning’s door’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[17] Seventeenth [is its] magnificent fulfilment [of] all that sought’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,

[1] 庄严清净功德成就者,偈言「观彼世界相,胜过三界道」故。
[2] 庄严量功德成就者,偈言「究竟如虚空,广大无边际」故。
[3] 庄严性功德成就者,偈言「正道大慈悲,出世善根生」故。

[3] 庄严虚空功德成就者,偈言「无量宝交络,罗网遍虚空,种种铃发响,宣吐妙法音」故。

[9] 庄严雨功德成就者,偈言「雨华衣庄严,无量香普熏」故。
[10] 庄严光明功德成就者,偈言「佛慧明净日,除世痴闇冥」故。
[11] 庄严妙声功德成就者,偈言「梵声悟深远,微妙闻十方」故。
[12] 庄严主功德成就者,偈言「正觉阿弥陀,法王善住持」故。
[13] 庄严眷属功德成就者,偈言「如来净华众,正觉华化生」故。
[14] 庄严受用功德成就者,偈言「爱乐佛法味,禅三昧为食」故。
[15] 庄严无诸难功德成就者,偈言「永离身心恼,受乐常无间」故。
[16] 庄严大义门功德成就者,偈言「大乘善根界,等无讥嫌名,女人及根缺,二乘种不生」故。

[9] [Of] that magnificent rain’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment, [a] verse thus says, ‘Raining flowers [and] clothing magnificent, [with] immeasurable fragrance universally permeating.’
[10] [Of] that magnificent bright light’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment, [a] verse thus says, ‘[the] Buddha’s wisdom [is] bright [and] pure [like the] sun, eradicating [the] world [of] ignorance’s darkness.’
[11] [Of] that magnificent wonderful sounds’ meritorious virtues’ accomplishment, [a] verse thus says, ‘[The] pure voice [of] awakening profound [and] lasting, [with] subtle wonders [is] heard [in the] ten directions.’
[12] [Of] that magnificent master’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment, [a] verse thus says, ‘[from the] rightly awakened Amitā[bha Buddha, the] Dharma King [who] well presides [there].’
[13] [Of] that magnificent family members’ meritorious virtues’ accomplishment, [a] verse thus says, ‘[The] Thus Come [One’s] pure flower assembly, [are from] right awakening’s flowers’ transformed births.’
[14] [Of] that magnificent use[ful] enjoyments’ meritorious virtues’ accomplishment, [a] verse thus says, ‘[with] love [and] joy [for the] Buddha’s Dharma’s flavours, [and] meditative samādhi as food.’
[15] [Of] that magnificentl[y being] without all difficulties’ meritorious virtues’ accomplishment, [a] verse thus says, ‘Forever departed [from] afflictions [of] body [and] mind, receiving bliss eternally without interruption.’
[16] [Of] that magnificent great meaning’s door’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment, [a] verse thus says, ‘
[in this] Great Vehicle’s roots’ realm, [all are] equal [and] without [the] contemptuous’ names. Women and [those with] roots lacking, [and those of the] Two Vehicles’ seeds [are] not born [there].’

净土果报,离二种讥嫌过,应知。

[The] Pure Land’s fruit’s rewards, [are] departed [from] two kinds [of] contemptuousnesses’ faults, [that] should [be known. 

[1] 一者体,
[2] 二者名。

[1] First, [is] body,
[2] Second, [is] name. 

体有三种:

Body has three kinds.

[1] 一者二乘人,
[2] 二者女人,
[3] 三者诸根不具人。

[1] First, [are the] Two Vehicles’ people,  
[2] Second, [are] women,
[3] Third, [are] people [with] all roots not complete. 

无此三过故,名离体讥嫌。

Without these three faults thus, [is] named [as] departure [from] body’s contemptuousnesses.

名亦三种。非但无三体,乃至不闻二乘、女人、诸根不具三种名故,名离名讥嫌。「等」者,平等一相故。

Name likewise [has] three kinds. Not only without [the] three bodies, and even not hearing names [of the] Two Vehicles, women, [and those with] all roots not complete thus, [is] named [as] departure [from names [of the] contemptuous. Those ‘equal’, [are] equal [with] one form thus.

[17] 庄严一切所求满足功德成就者,偈言「众生所愿乐,一切能满足」故。

[17] [Of] that magnificent fulfilment [of] all that sought’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment, [a] verse thus says, ‘[of] that sentient beings aspire joyfully [for], all [are] able [to be] fulfilled.’

略说彼阿弥陀佛国土十七种庄严功德成就。示现如来自身利益大功德力成就,利益他功德成就故。

Briefly said [were] that Amitā[bha] Buddha’s land’s seventeen kinds [of] magnificent meritorious virtues’ accomplishments. Manifestation [of the] Thus Come [One’s] own self’s benefits [from] great meritorious virtues’ power’s accomplishment, [is for] benefitting others’ meritorious virtues’ accomplishment thus.      

彼无量寿佛国土庄严,第一义谛妙境界相,十六句及一句,次第说,应知。

That Immeasurable Life Buddha’s land’s magnificence, [are of the] supreme truth’s wonderful realm’s forms, [with] sixteen [distinct] lines and one [general] line, [have been] sequentially said, [that] should [be] known.

云何观佛庄严功德成就?观佛庄严功德成就者,有八种相,应知。何等八种?

What [is] contemplation [of the] Buddha’s magnificent meritorious virtues’ accomplishment? Contemplation [of the] Buddha’s magnificent meritorious virtues, has eight kinds [of] forms, [that] should [be] known. What are [the] eight kinds? 

[1] 一者庄严座功德成就,
[2] 二者庄严身业功德成就,
[3] 三者庄严口业功德成就,
[4] 四者庄严心业功德成就,
[5] 五者庄严大众功德成就,
[6] 六者庄严上首功德成就,
[7] 七者庄严主功德成就,
[8] 八者庄严不虚作住持功德成就。

[1] First, [is] magnificent seat’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[2] Second, [is] magnificent bodily karma’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[3] Third, [is] magnificent verbal karma’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[4] Fourth, [is] magnificent mental karma’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[5] Fifth, [is] magnificent great assembly’s meritorious virtues’  accomplishment,
[6] Sixth, [is] magnificent foremost [disciples’] meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[7] Seventh, [is] magnificent master’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment,
[8] Eighth, [is] magnificently, not falsely being [the] Abbot’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment.

[1] 何者庄严座功德成就?偈言「无量大宝王,微妙净华台」故。
[2] 何者庄严身业功德成就?偈言「相好光一寻,色像超群生」故。
[3] 何者庄严口业功德成就?偈言「如来微妙声,梵响闻十方」故。
[4] 何者庄严心业功德成就?偈言「同地水火风,虚空无分别」故。「无分别」者,无分别心故。
[5] 何者庄严大众功德成就?偈言「天人不动众,清净智海生」故。
[6] 何者庄严上首功德成就?偈言「如须弥山王,胜妙无过者」故。
[7] 何者庄严主功德成就?偈言「天人丈夫众,恭敬绕瞻仰」故。
[8] 何者庄严不虚作住持功德成就?偈言「观佛本愿力,遇无空过者,能令速满足,功德大宝海」故。

[1] What [is] magnificent seat’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment? [A] verse thus says, ‘immeasurable great treasures’ king’s subtle, wonderful [and] pure] flower platforms.’
[2] What [is] magnificent bodily karma’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment? [A] verse thus says, ‘[With] forms’ excellences’ light [of] one yojana, [his] form’s image surpasses sentient beings’.’
[3] What [is] magnificent verbal karma’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment? [A] verse thus says, ‘[the] Thus Come [One’s] subtle [and] wonderful voice’s pure sound [can be] heard [in the] ten directions.’
[4] What [is] magnificent mental karma’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment? [A] verse thus says, ‘Similar [to] earth, water, fire, wind, [and] empty space, without discrimination.’
[5] What [is] magnificent great assembly’s meritorious virtues’  accomplishment? [A] verse thus says, ‘heavenly [and] human [beings of the] immovable assembly, [are from] pure wisdom’s ocean born.’
[6] What [is] magnificent foremost [disciples’] meritorious virtues’ accomplishment? [A] verse thus says, ‘Like [the] Sumeru Mountain King, [with] supreme wonders without those surpassing.’
[7] What [is] magnificent master’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment? [A] verse thus says, ‘heavenly [and] human [beings in the] male assembly, reverently circumambulate [and] gaze [upon him].’
[8] What [is] magnificently, not falsely being [the] Abbot’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment? [A] verse thus says, ‘Contemplating [Amitābha] Buddha’s original vows’ power, [and] encountering [them, are] without those in vain, able [to] enable swift fulfilment, [with] meritorious virtues’ great treasures’ ocean.’

即见彼佛,未证净心菩萨,毕竟得证平等法身。与净心菩萨,与上地诸菩萨,毕竟同得寂灭平等故。

Immediately seeing that Buddha, [those] yet [to] realise [as] pure-minded Bodhisattvas, [will] ultimately attain realisation [of the] equal Dharma body. With pure-minded Bodhisattvas, and all Bodhisattvas above ground,    [they will] ultimately attain stillness [and] eradication [of defilements: i.e. Nirvāṇa] equally thus. 

略说八句,示现如来自利利他功德庄严次第成就,应知。

Briefly said [were] eight lines, manifesting [the] Thus Come [One’s] self-benefitting [and] other-benefitting meritorious virtues’ magnificence, [of their] sequential accomplishments, [that] should [be] known.

云何观察菩萨庄严功德成就?观察菩萨庄严功德成就者,观彼菩萨有四种正修行功德成就,应知。何者为四?

What [is] observing Bodhisattvas’ magnificent meritorious virtues’ accomplishment? Those observing Bodhisattvas’ magnificent meritorious virtues’ accomplishment, observe those Bodhisattvas [to] have four kinds [of] right cultivation’s practices’ meritorious virtues’ accomplishment, [that] should [be] known. What are [the] four?

[1] 一者于一佛土身不动摇,而遍十方种种应化,如实修行,常作佛事。偈言「安乐国清净,常转无垢轮,化佛菩萨日,如须弥住持」故。开诸众生淤泥华故。
[2] 二者彼应化身,一切时不前不后,一心一念,放大光明。悉能遍至十方世界,教化众生,种种方便,修行所作,灭除一切众生苦故。偈言「无垢庄严光,一念及一时,普照诸佛会,利益诸群生」故。
[3] 三者彼于一切世界,无余照诸佛会大众,无余广大无量供养、恭敬、赞叹诸佛如来功德。偈言「雨天乐华衣,妙香等供养,赞诸佛功德,无有分别心」故。
[4] 四者彼于十方一切世界无三宝处,住持庄严佛、法、僧宝功德大海,遍示令解如实修行。偈言「何等世界无,佛法功德宝,我愿皆往生,示佛法如佛」故。

[1] First, in one Buddha land, [with the] body not swaying, yet pervading [the] ten directions [with] all kinds [of] responsive manifestations, as truly, cultivating practice, constantly doing Buddhas’ matters. [A] verse thus says, ‘[The] Land [Of] Peace [And] Bliss [is] pure, constantly turning [the] stainless [Dharma] wheel, manifesting Buddhas [and] Bodhisattvas [like the] sun, like Sumeru [always] presiding.’ [They] open all sentient beings, [like] silt’s flowers thus.
[2] Second, their responsive manifestation bodies, [are at] all times, without before without after, [with] one mind [and] one thought, emitting great bright light. All [are] able [to] pervasively reach [the] ten directions’ worlds, [to] teach [and] transform sentient beings, [with] all kinds [of] skilful means, [with] cultivated practices that [are] done, [to] eradicate all sentient beings’ suffering thus. [A] verse thus says, ‘Stainless magnificent light, [in] each thought and each moment, universally illuminates all [of the] Buddha’s assemblies, [to] benefit all sentient beings.’ 
[3] Third, they in all worlds, without exception illuminate all Buddhas’ assemblies’ great assemblies, without exception [making] vast, great [and] immeasurable offerings, reverencing, [and] praising all Buddha Thus Come [Ones’] meritorious virtues. [A] verse thus says, ‘Raining heavenly music, flowers [and] clothing, [with] wonderful incense [and] other offerings, [for] praising all Buddhas’ meritorious virtues, without having [the] discriminating mind.’ 
[4] Fourth, they in [the] ten directions’ all worlds’ places without [the] Triple Gem, preside [to] uphold magnificent Buddhas’, Dharma’s [and] Saṃgha’s treasure meritorious virtues] great ocean, everywhere guiding [to] enable understanding, [to] as truly, cultivate practice. [A] verse thus says, ‘[In] what[ever] world without Buddhas’ [and] Dharma’s meritorious virtues’ treasures, I vow, [to] all [be] reborn [in, to] guide [with the] Buddha’s Dharma like [the] Buddhas.’ 

又向说观察庄严佛土功德成就、庄严佛功德成就、庄严菩萨功德成就。此三种成就,愿心庄严,应知。

Furthermore, [as] previously said, [on] observing magnificence [of the] Buddha land’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment, magnificence [of the] Buddha’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment, [and] magnificence [of the] Bodhisattvas’ meritorious virtues’ accomplishment, these three kinds [of] accomplishments, [for the] mind [of] aspiration’s adornment, should [be] known.

略说入一法句故。一法句者,谓清净句。清净句者,谓真实智慧、无为法身故。此清净有二种,应知。何等二种?

Briefly speaking [for] entry [is] one Dharma word thus. That one Dharma word, [is] called [the] word ‘purity’. That word ‘purity’, [is] called true wisdom, unconditioned Dharma body thus. This purity has two kinds, [that] should [be] known. What [are the] two kinds?

[1] 一者器世间清净,
[2] 二者众生世间清净。

[1] First, [is the] vessel world’s purity.
[2] Second, [is] sentient beings’ world’s purity. 

器世间清净者,如向说十七种庄严佛土功德成就,是名器世间清净。

That [of the] vessel world’s purity, as previously said, [has] seventeen kinds [of] magnificent Buddha land’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment, [that] are named [as the] vessel world’s purity.       

众生世间清净者,如向说八种庄严佛功德成就、四种庄严菩萨功德成就,是名众生世间清净。如是一法句,摄二种清净义,应知。

That [of] sentient beings’ world’s purity, as previously said, [has] eight kinds [of] magnificent Buddha’s meritorious virtues’ accomplishment, [and] four kinds [of] magnificent Bodhisattvas’ meritorious virtues’ accomplishment, [that] are named [as] sentient beings’ world’s purity. Thus, [this] one Dharma word, gathers two kinds [of] purity’s meanings, [that] should [be] known.

如是菩萨,奢摩他、毗婆舍那广略修行,成就柔软心,如实知广略诸法,如是成就巧方便回向。

Such Bodhisattvas, [with] Śamatha, [and] Vipaśyanā broadly [or] briefly cultivate practice, [to] accomplish [the] gentle [and] supple mind, as truly, knowing broadly [or] briefly [of] all dharmas, thus accomplish skilful dedication. 

何者菩萨巧方便回向?菩萨巧方便回向者,谓说礼拜等五种修行,所集一切功德善根,不求自身住持之乐,欲拔一切众生苦故。作愿摄取一切众生,共同生彼安乐佛国。是名菩萨巧方便回向成就。

What [is] that [named] Bodhisattvas’ skilful dedication? That Bodhisattvas’ skilful dedication, [as] said, [is with] prostrating [and] others’ five kinds [of] cultivated practices, all those collected meritorious virtues’ good roots, not [for] seeking oneself’s abiding of bliss, desiring [to] remove all sentient beings’ suffering thus, making [the] vow [to] gather all sentient beings, [to] together [be] born [in] that] Buddha Land [Of] Peace [And] Bliss. [This] is named [as] Bodhisattvas’ skilful dedication’s accomplishment. 

菩萨如是善知回向成就,即能远离三种菩提门相违法。何等三种?

Bodhisattvas thus, [with] good-knowing [and] dedication’s accomplishments, [are] then able [to] far depart [from] three kinds [of] Bodhi doors’ contradicting dharmas. What [are the] three kinds?

[1] 一者依智慧门,不求自乐,远离我心贪著自身故。
[2] 二者依慈悲门,拔一切众生苦,远离无安众生心故。
[3] 三者依方便门,怜愍一切众生心,远离供养恭敬自身心故。

[1] First, [is] reliance [upon the] wisdom door, not [for] seeking personal bliss, far departing [from] self’s mind [with] greedy attachment [for] oneself thus.
[2] Second, [is] reliance [upon] loving-kindness [and] compassion’s door, [for] removing all sentient beings’ suffering, far departing [from] without [bringing] peace [to] sentient beings’ minds thus.
[3] Third, [is] reliance upon skilful means’ door, [with] empathy [for] all sentient beings’ mind, far departing [from seeking] offerings [and] reverence [for] oneself’s mind thus.

是名远离三种菩提门相违法。

These [are] named [as] far departure [from the] three kinds [of] Bodhi doors’ contradicting dharmas.

菩萨远离如是三种菩提门相违法,得三种随顺菩提门法满足故。何等三种?

Bodhisattvas far depart [from] such three kinds [of] Bodhi doors’ contradicting dharmas, [and] attain three kinds [of] dharmas [that] accord [with] Bodhi doors’ fulfilment thus. What [are the] three kinds?

[1] 一者无染清净心,以不为自身求诸乐故。
[2] 二者安清净心,以拔一切众生苦故。
[3] 三者乐清净心,以令一切众生得大菩提故,以摄取众生生彼国土故。

[1] First, [is the] untainted pure mind, with not for oneself seeking all [kinds of] bliss thus.
[2] Second, [is the] peaceful pure mind, with removing [of] all sentient beings’ suffering thus.
[3] Third, [is the] joyful pure mind, with enabling [of] all sentient beings [to] attain great Bodhi thus, with gathering [of] sentient beings [to be] born [in] that land thus.

是名三种随顺菩提门法满足,应知。

[These] are named [the] three kinds [of] dharmas [that] accord [with] Bodhi doors’ fulfilment, [that] should [be] known.

向说智慧、慈悲、方便三种门,摄取般若,般若摄取方便,应知。

[As] previously said, wisdom, loving-kindness [and] compassion, [and] skilful means’ three kinds [of] doors, gather Prajñā, [and] Prajñā gathers skilful means, [that] should [be] known. 

向说远离我心不贪著自身、远离无安众生心、远离供养恭敬自身心。此三种法,远离障菩提心,应知。

[As] previously said, [were to] far depart [from] self’s mind, [to be] without greedy attachment [for] oneself, far depart [from] not [bringing] peace [to] sentient beings’ mind, [and to] far depart [from seeking] offerings [and] reverence [for] oneself’s mind. These three kinds [of] dharmas, far depart [from] obstacles [of the] Bodhi mind [i.e. Bodhicitta, that] should [be] known. 

向说无染清净心、安清净心、乐清净心。此三种心,略一处成就妙乐胜真心,应知。

[As] previously said, [were the] untainted pure mind, peaceful pure mind, [and the] blissful pure mind. These three kinds [of] minds, complete [in] one place accomplishes wonderful bliss’ supreme true mind, [that] should [be] known.

如是菩萨智慧心、方便心、无障心、胜真心,能生清净佛国土,应知。是名菩萨摩诃萨随顺五种法门,所作随意自在成就。如向所说身业、口业、意业、智业、方便智业,随顺法门故。

Thus [with] Bodhisattvas’ wisdom mind, skilful means’ mind, unobstructed mind [and the] supremely true mind, [they are] able [to be] born [in the] pure Buddha land, [that] should [be] known. These [are] named Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas’ according [with] five kinds [of] Dharma Doors, [with] that done according [to that] wished, [with] ease accomplished. Like previously as said, bodily karma, verbal karma, mental karma, wisdom karma, and skilful wisdom’s karma, accord [with the] Dharma Doors thus.

复有五种门,渐次成就五种功德,应知。何者五门?

Moreover, [there] are five kinds [of] doors, [for] gradually accomplishing five kinds [of] meritorious virtues, [that] should [be] known. What [are the] five doors?

[1] 一者近门,
[2] 二者大会众门,
[3] 三者宅门,
[4] 四者屋门,
[5] 五者园林游戏地门。

[1] First, [is the] near door,
[2] Second, [is the] great assembly door,
[3] Third, [is the] residence door,
[4] Fourth, [is the] house door,
[5] Fifth, [is the] garden playground door. 

此五种门,初四种门,成就入功德;第五门,成就出功德。

These five kinds [of] doors, [in the] beginning [have] four kinds [of] doors, [for] accomplishing entering [of] meritorious virtues; [with the] fifth door, [for] accomplishing exiting [of] meritorious virtues.

[1] 入第一门者,以礼拜阿弥陀佛,为生彼国故,得生安乐世界。是名入第一门。
[2] 入第二门者,以赞叹阿弥陀佛,随顺名义称如来名,依如来光明智相修行故,得入大会众数。是名入第二门。
[3] 入第三门者,以一心专念作愿生彼,修奢摩他寂静三昧行故,得入莲华藏世界。是名入第三门。
[4] 入第四门者,以专念观察彼妙庄严,修毗婆舍那故,得到彼处,受用种种法味乐。是名入第四门。
[5] 出第五门者,以大慈悲,观察一切苦恼众生,示应化身,回入生死园烦恼林中,游戏神通,至教化地,以本愿力回向故。是名出第五门。

[1] Those entering [the] first door, with prostration [to] Amitā[bha] Buddha, for birth [in] that land thus, attain birth [in his] Land [Of] Peace [And] Bliss. [This] is named entry [of the] first door.
[2] Those entering [the] second door, with praise [of] Amitā[bha] Buddha, according [to his] name’s meanings, praising [the] Thus Come [One’s] name, relying [upon the] Thus Come [One’s] bright light [and] wisdom’s forms [to] cultivate practices thus, attain entry [into the] great assembly’s numbers. [This] is named entry [of the] second door.
[3] Those entering [the] third door, with wholehearted focused mindfulness making vow [for] birth there, cultivating Śamatha’s still [and] silent samādhi practice thus, attaining entry [into the] Lotus Flower Treasury World. [This] is named entry [of the] third door.
[4] Those entering [the] fourth door, with focused mindfulness observing that [land’s] wonderful magnificence, cultivating Vipaśyanā thus, attain reach [of] that place, [to] use [and] enjoy all kinds [of] Dharma flavours’ bliss. [This] is named entry [of the] fourth door.
[5] Those exiting [with the] fifth door, with great loving-kindness [and] compassion, observing all sentient beings’ suffering [and] afflictions, guiding [with] responsive manifestation bodies, returning [to] enter [the] garden [of] birth [and] death’s afflictions’ forest within, [with] play [of] supernormal [powers], arriving [to] teach [and] transform others, with [their] original vows’ power’s dedication thus. [This] is named exit [with the] fifth door.

菩萨入四种门,自利行成就,应知。

Bodhisattvas entry [with] four kinds [of] doors, [for] self-benefitting practices’ accomplishments, should [be] known.

菩萨出第五门,回向利益他行成就,应知。

Bodhisattvas exit [with the] fifth door, [with] dedicating [of meritorious virtues to] benefit others’ practices’ accomplishment, should [be] known.

菩萨如是修五门行,自利利他,速得成就阿耨多罗三藐三菩提故。

Bodhisattvas’ thus cultivate [the] five doors’ practices, [for] self-benefit [and to] benefit others, [to] swiftly attain accomplishment [of] Anuttara Samyak Saṃbodhi thus. 

《无量寿修多罗优婆提舍愿生偈》略解义竟。

[The] brief explanation [of the] meaning [of the] ‘Immeasurable Life Sūtra’s Upadeśa’s Verses [On] Aspiration [For] Birth’ [is hereby] complete.
