‘今之学密宗者,多开荤吃肉。反大嘉美其事,谓为吃了就度脱了,则成魔说矣。喇嘛做大佛事,尚须吃素。可知平常吃肉,固非正义。’
– 净土宗十三祖印光大师
(复石金华居士书)
‘Nowadays, [i.e. at least between the years 1862 to 1940, and to some extent to this present day], of those who learn the esoteric [Vajrayana] teachings, many are open to eating of meat [and/or the five pungent roots of garlic, leeks, onion, chives and asafoetida]. Contrary [to the practice of great compassion, they] greatly praise this [meat-eating] to be an excellent matter, saying that having eaten [the dead animals] is to have [them] delivered to liberation already, thus becoming what demons [would] say. Lamas [i.e. Vajrayana monastic teachers] who conduct great Buddhist ceremonies, still must eat veg[etari]an [food]. [We] can [thus] see that to usually eat meat [in the Vajrayana tradition], is undoubtedly not the right meaning [or practice of the Dharma].’
