How A ‘Father’ Can Directly Carry A Child Home 父如何直提子回家

念佛法门,但具真信切愿,至诚念佛。及至临命终时,必蒙佛慈接引,往生西方。喻如小孩,由父母提携,即可直达本家也。

[The] Dharma Door [Of] Mindfulness [Of] Buddha, only [needs one to be] complete [with] true Faith [and] sincere Aspiration [to, with] utmost sincerity, [be] mindful [of Amitā(bha)] Buddha[‘s name: 阿弥陀佛: ‘Āmítuófó’]. [Practising thus], up till when approaching [the] end [of] life, [one] definitely [will] receive [the] Buddha’s kind reception [and] guidance, [to be] reborn [in his] Western [Pure Land. As an] analogy, like [a] small child, due [to the] Father’s [or] Mother’s carrying, [one] can immediately [and] directly reach [one’s] original home.

近人多好立异,不肯做老实工夫,故有学禅宗相宗密宗者。此三法门,均不可思议,然均属自力。

Recently, many people [are] fond [of] establishing [the] different, not willing [to put in] earnest effort [to practise as above], thus are [there] those [who] learning [from the] Chán Tradition, [Fǎ]xiāng Tradition [法相宗: Dharma Characteristics Tradition; 瑜伽宗: Yogācāra Tradition; 唯识宗: Consciousness-Only Tradition] [and] Esoteric Tradition. These three Dharma Doors, [although are] equally inconceivable, however, [they] equally depend [on] Self-power [only, without support of Other-power available in the Pure Land Tradition].

密宗虽有现身成佛之义,而现身成者,究有几人。莫道学密之人,不能现身成佛。即传密宗之活佛,也不是现身成佛之人。

[The] Esoteric Tradition, although having association to, [in this] present body accomplishing Buddhahood, yet [of] those [who in their] present bodies accomplish [so], after all, how many people are [there? This is] not [to] say [that] people [who] learn [the] Esoteric Tradition, [are] not able [to, in their] present bodies accomplish Buddhahood. [However], even of [so-called] ‘living Buddhas, [who] transmit [the] Esoteric Tradition, [they] also are not people [who, in their] present lives accomplished Buddhahood.    

汝等且莫随此各法门知识转,则现生便可出此五浊,登彼九品,为弥陀之弟子,作海会之良朋矣。

You [and] others, also [should] not accord [with] these various Dharma Doors’ knowledge [to be] transformed, [to part from the Pure Land teachings]. Thus [in this] present life, then [are you] able [to] exit [from] this [world with the] Five Defilements [of kalpa, views, afflictions, sentient beings and lifespans, to] ascend [the] other [shore’s] nine grades [of lotus births in Pure Land], as disciples of Āmítuófó, [to] become good friends of [the lotus pond] ocean[-wide] assembly!
