Question: What should we practise to attain enlightenment?
Answer: A brief answer is that any practice that has the complete Noble Eightfold Path can lead to self-liberation (Arhathood), and any practice that has the Six Paramitas (Perfections) can lead to Buddhahood, when is there will be perfect ability to guide all to enlightenment.
Question: Should we practise to attain enlightenment in this lifetime, or seek better rebirth elsewhere for eventual enlightenment?
Answer: If we recognise that it is extremely difficult to attain even self-liberation is this single lifetime despite our diligence, which is the case for most of us, we should practise to ensure we will attain rebirth in the best possible place to attain liberation in one lifetime. This place is Amituofo’s Pure Land, which is recommended by ALL Buddhas in the Amitabha Sutra. As death, followed by rebirth is certain for us, the unenlightened, and as the moment of death is uncertain, capable of striking at any time, this makes the Pure Land practice all the more relevant, important and urgent.
